Chillin'

So earlier this month I left Aideron Robotics.

It was not a decision I made lightly or off the cuff, nor one I made without reservations about what I was deciding to do.

I felt that the corporation and the alliance it was part of was moving in a direction that left me feeling adrift. My role back when we were keeping the lights on in Aideron during the dark days and during the rebuilding had been to run the weekly roam and keep some group content flowing and that role is no longer needed in the busy and bustling alliance and the coalition it is part of.

I also feel like FEDUP and the larger Gal Mil coalition are extremely focused on null sec holdings and content and I'm not interested in that content. In null sec your space owns you, not the other way around. Besides, low sec is where my heart is. While no one said that my weekly low sec roam was prohibited (indeed, it was even welcome) there was often enough content generated by other FCs and fleets that it was not needed.

But the final straw came when we became allies with the Goons. I gave that a try once long ago, wasn't too my liking.

I decided I needed a change.

I considered joining another Gal Mil group less entangled with null sec and its politics, but let's face it; CCP has left Faction Warfare to wither and die.

I thought about going solo and running open public roams, but really, that seems like more work than I have time for.

So what to do?

I decided to give Stay Frosty corporation a try. Low sec PvP? Check. No null sec entanglements? Check. Rixx Javix? Double check.

I plan to start up a Sunday Night fleet roaming low sec again and we'll see if there is still some life in me and low sec.

New Era for Aideron Robotics

As part of the development of Fortress Fliet, my corporation of the last four years Aideron Robotics has been working more closely with other Gallente Militia groups that invested in the system in light of the winter assault by the Caldari Militia led by Scylus Black and his band of fiends (vote Scylus Black for CSM 2017).

One group in particular, Mecha Enterprises Fleet corporation (ticker: XMETA), a long time militia partner turned out to work extremely well with us and relations developed beyond the previous cooperation. Thus it was decided to officially recognize our stronger relationship by forming a new alliance.

Introducing Federation Uprising (ticker: FEDUP):

This represents a new era for Aideron Robotics and I look forward to the challenges and rewards of working more closely with our new allies.

Second Time's The Charm

A few days past Aideron made a second attempt to anchor and online an Azbel Engineering Complex (once again produced by your humble author) and this time we were successful.

Aideron's Azbel
This structure is part of a larger plan to turn the system of Fliet into a bulwark for the warzone in the south against the waves of Caldari Militia pilots. Combined with the Fortizar citadel laid down by our militia allies Mecha Enterprises Fleet (XMETA) we have made great strides to turn our home system into Fortress Fliet. We are hoping that this solid base can be a rally point for the militia to regroup from the fall of Vlillier and push back against the Caldari offensive.

If all goes according to plan, I hope to move some of my production for Ninveah Enterprises to Fliet to make use of low sec production bonuses for more $$$.

Surviving by the Skin of My Teeth

Sunday night's fleet was Speed Swarm, i.e. fast frigates that swarm on targets of opportunity and kill them before escaping from superior forces. Microwarp Drives On!

We roamed the warzone looking for targets of opporunity, and at one point we contacted by allies in Black Fox Marauders corporation (aka BLFOX) to assist on a hot drop on a roaming hostile cruiser gang. BLFOX had a bait Megathron with cyno fitted and a Slasher for tackle and a handful of carriers ready to jump in, but needed more tackle to prevent more of the cruisers from escaping the wrath of the fighters.

The Megathron moved into position and engaged the enemy, and we swooped in as the fight started and spread our points on all the targets. Once pointed, the carriers jumped in and began melting the cruisers in short order. The Megathron died, but so did all the cruisers:

Our frigate fleet survived intact, and as a bonus one of our new pilots scored this amazing podmail worth an estimated 2.4 billion ISK.

Later on we were heading home when we saw a war target in an Omen Navy Issue in a quiet system. He was strategically positioned on the outside of a complex such that any frigates trying to close the 100 km plus gap would have to contend with his drones and lasers. Nevertheless, we tried to circle him with our super fast interceptors and my speed Garmur, dodging in and out of his targeting range to try and tackle him. Finally I got a point on him and called in the rest of the frigates but was taking serious damage. I tried to warp out and watched in horror as my favourite ship's armour dissipated and I dipped into hull... but finally pulled into the warp tunnel.

I checked and had 6 out of 560 hull points left. A true 1% escape.

He warped off but an eagle eyed pilot saw where he warped too so the fleet followed and got point again, and proceeded to tear him up. Good fight, and good fleet!

Like Starting Over

One thing about FCing for the same group of guys over a long period of time is that you become very familiar and comfortable with what everyone knows and can do, so you can give an order and reasonable expect it to be followed to the best of everyone's duty. Also, when you put a fleet together asking for a particular ship type, you can look at your fleet size and immediately know what your capabilities are in terms of fights and targets you can take.

However, with the advent of Ascension and the efforts Aideron Robotics has been doing to recruit new inexperienced players, I've found myself having to get out of my comfort zone and be a more proactive and attentive Fleet Commander which means explaining things with more detail, giving more instructions repeatedly, being patient, and being aware that a significant portion of my fleet is made up of Alpha Atrons just learning PvP.

Sunday night was the second fleet I ran since the expansion and it was one in which not only the new players were trying and learning things, but also some veterans as myself and Ashterothi and Kuruk were flying Magus Command Destroyers with the new on grid links.

Overall the fleet was a little more chaotic than I am used to; some pilots need some lessons on fleet comms (i.e. I don't need to know your father is kicking you off the computer in 15 minutes) and finding the fleet, others (like me) need to be a little more careful with the micro jump field generator. But in the end we had fun and got a few sweet kills like this expensive Osprey Navy Issue we surprised and this Scythe Fleet Issue we managed to burn down before losing fleet cohesion and getting picked off.

Its a different fleet for sure but I'm confident we can help our new pilots get better and become the good PvPer's I know they can be.

Aideron Robotics Evolution

About 2 years ago Aideron Robotics moved from the then capital system of Gallente Militia, Nennamailia in Black Rise region, to Heydieles in Essence region (and later to next door to Fliet), to work on developing the corporation in terms of identity and membership.

Over the intervening time we've had some membership fluctuations, some wins, some losses, but overall we were successful in establishing a unique corp culture and relationship with the rest of Gallente Militia and other low sec entities.

When the Gallente Militia Civil War started this past year we were able to leverage that unique position to remain friendly with both sides and keep neutral, hopefully providing some use as a friendly go between for the two camps to remind them that Caldari Militia is always the ultimate threat.

This summer we looked at our current state and we felt we needed to expand beyond our comfort zone of frigates, destroyers, and cruisers and look into integrating with the larger Gallente Militia culture. Part of this is because our members have matured and want to explore larger fights against more dangerous enemies than we alone can face, and part is because the miltia has thinned down due to the stagnant state of faction warfare and our presence in bolstering fleets can be more acutely felt.

The result this summer has been a few instances where Aideron pilots have joined a forming Gallente Militia fleet and doubled its size, allowing some amazing fights against Cal Mil and pirates that otherwise would not have happened with battlecruisers and battleships. These victories and experience work into a positive feedback loop where our pilots want to join more fleets and increase enthusiasm for other pilots.

The next step for Aideron is to develop our own Fleet Commanders in these larger doctrines and work with the leadership of the larger Gal Mil to support and lead more fleets. That involves me getting out of my small fleet comfort zone and getting more bold but I feel up to the challenge.

In other news, Aideron Robotics is recruiting so if you are interested in PvP in low sec as part of Gallente Militia, check us out on the web and in game in the "Aideron Robotics" public channel.

Kirith's Grand Emporium

Aideron Robotics is in a rebuilding phase of corp life, recruiting and expanding fleets. Part of that expansion of activity as the decision to learn more about citadels by trying to deploy on in our home system and defend it.

A citadel is deployed in space and is invulnerable for 24 hrs while its built. Then, after its deployed it has 15 minute window in order to repair itself and get its shields up. The citadels you hear about getting destroyed are all getting hit during that repair period.

After seeing some other low sec citadels getting blown up good we debated holding off but decided to go ahead as the death rate was relatively low and we felt that even the experience of defending it would be a good lesson. I donated an Astrahus to the corporation and we planned to deploy it Saturday with the aim of it coming out of construction during our prime Sunday night fleet time.

In the hour lead up to the go live point we prepped a large fleet and dispatched scouts to watch the two entrance systems to Fliet. I expected reports of a large hostile T3 or battleship fleet any minute as the countdown continued. At the fifteen minute mark we were keyed up to undock as powerful fleet as we could muster which is either impressive or unimpressive depending on what we were facing.

And yet, intel reported nothing... WAIT, a lone pilot in a nemesis, perhaps a cyno for a black ops fleet or titan bridge? Silence... but nothing.

The timer hit zero and the citadel was online but vulnerable. We quickly attempted to put fighters into it and began a hilarious routine in which we 1) couldn't figure out at first where the fighter bay was, then 2) discovered neither of the two leaders trying to use the fighters had the new skill trained, and 3) when I tried to take control of the citadel (amazing feeling by the way) I lacked permissions! Finally we got squared away and I was able to load and launch fighters which I used to attack a friendly unfit Incursus as a test. By the way, the key to activate the move mode for fighters is 'Q' only if you left the default key bindings. The more correct thing to say is that the Approach key binding is the same as the fighter move mode command.

The 15 minute timer expired and our citadel, named Kirith's Grand Emporium thanks to my donation, was safe! OP SUCCESS!

We're going to use it to become more familiar with Citadel mechanics and defending/attacking them. Welcome to the Citadel Age.

Aideron Hecate Fleet

Aideron Robotics has been eagerly awaiting the fourth and final Tactical Destroyer for months, half a year even. While we made some use of the other destroyers in various solo, small gang, and fleet applications, none of them slotted perfectly into our current major doctrines of Gallente / Drone / Rails / Armour-Hull tanking, but the Gallente version had promise to do so.

As the stats of the new ship solidified our theorycrafters when to work and I made an announcement: an Aideron Hecate fleet the Sunday night after the ship is released in which I provided the fully fit ships to everyone who could attend.

It was expensive, but totally worth it. Since the Hecate fits into our main doctrine and skill training so nicely, less than a week after release we put together a fleet of 15-17 Hecates and a bunch of Navitas logistics and paid a visit to Brave Newbies new system in Placid region. We didn't run into any serious brawls but we got some kills here and there and proved we really like the new ship.

Here are some screenshots from the fleet, click for full size.

Expect to see more on this ship in the future.

BTW, Aideron Robotics is recruiting! Come talk to us in public channel "Aideron Robotics"!

Getting Back On The Horse

May has been a terrible month for me EVE-wise, with real life and work stress combined with my 18th anniversary to Mrs Kodachi and a related weekend getaway taking away a lot of my ability to log in and do anything.

As the month closes out, however, things have been improving.

I've got a fleet planned for this weekend and I hope to generate some content for Aideron. I've restarted capital building for Project Vulcan. My alt is training up for a new combat role to assist my fleets and should be ready soon. And Aideron Robotics itself is gearing up for a summer of excitement and new challenges.

Here's to making April JUNE an Awesome month.

Gallente Militia Training Fleet

Aideron's Dear Leader is having a training event for new pilots in the Gallente Starter Corp Friday night:

Due to increased tension between the empire factions and new emergent threats, the Senate has authorized additional funds for training Capsuleers in defense of the Federation. The Federal Navy Academy will be making use of these new funds to conduct a training fleet in low security space on 2015-04-04 @ 01:00 (Friday night US TZ) open to all Federal Navy Academy pilots.

Form up will be at the Villore VI - Federal Defense Union Logistic Support station. Each pilot will be given one of the following ships:

Atron: Asgard
Catalyst: Battalyst

Both of these are less than a day to train and should be pretty easy to get into.

As this is a training fleet, no PVP experience is required. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions during fleet as well as Q&A after fleet. To join these fleets you must have Mumble installed.
// Instructor Cyr Nardieu
If you are a new pilot, please join the fleet! If you are an older pilot, please create a new alt and feel free to join us!

Aideron Open Fleet This Sunday

I'm running an Aideron Open Fleet this Sunday night starting at ~8:15 PM EST (Monday at 0115 EVE Time), leaving from Fliet in Essence region. We can pick you up in Charmerout nearby if you're a High Sec carebear afraid to step into Low Sec. :)

We will be flying armour ship doctrines so feel free to join us in whatever you got! We also have Atrons to hand out to those in need.

Next Step, Stepping Up

My goal of 2014 was to become a Fleet Commander, comfortable in the role and competent enough to be trusted by corporation leadership and the line members to take a fleet out and not whelp it pointlessly (unless whelping was the point).

I feel that the year was a resounding success to the point where if I'm in a fleet and not the FC, I really really want to be. In control of all the ships, directing them to the next position, getting scouts to report from neighbouring systems, its all very addictive... FLY MY PRETTIES, FLY!
Rare image of Kirith FCing.

Surprisingly, I think that becoming an FC has increased my desire to lead and direct at work as well, leading me into a more architectural and design role rather than simply an awesome developer and scrumlord... er... scrummaster.

I'm a scrummaster, I scrummast.

But the question now is what is the next step for my Eve personal development? (Its sad I agonize more over this question than my next step for work development at my job.) I think my next goal is to raise my profile within the militia with the other core Galente corps and try to make a name and good reputation for myself such that I can be counted on to lead larger and more diversified fleets. This will require me stepping out of another comfort zone (that of approaching strangers and relative unknown quantities) but I feel I'm ready for that step.

I don't harbour any illusions I will be mentioned on the same level as some current excellent and well known GalMil FCs, but I want to be considered as an acceptable one outside of Aideron Robotics.

To that end, I'm planning a large open fleet sometime near the end of February or beginning of March. More details coming.

Aideron Robotics Guristas Event Aftermath

Video from Enemy's viewpoint.

So last night we had another special event for Aideron Robotics where we undocked in Fliet with a Guristas themed fleet supported by two Chimera carriers (including your humble author). We had a backbone of Rattlesnakes and Gilas supported by Guristas skinned Ferox and Cormorants, along with Scorpions and miscellaneous other ships. Here are some pretty images:

Ultimately there was a lot of fleets around, a friendly Gal Mil fleet, a hostile Cal Mil fleet, Overload Everything, Psychotic Tendencies, Spectre Fleet, EVE Uni, .... if I missed you shout in the comments and I'll edit the post!

Our fleet capped at 55 pilot and we were overpowered by enemies in Navy Armageddons, Absolutions, Guardians, and two triage Archons (hopefully bought from Ninveah Enterprises!). It was not a long fight and I was last Aideron on field as the Psychotic Tendencies fleet repped me for a while to control the grid and perhaps the killmail. Seeing what they were doing, I offered shield reps in local and gave them a boost before I died.

We mostly had a good time and learned a lot about where we need to improve to hold our own against the big players in the neighbourhood. Thanks to everyone who came out and contributed to the carnage.

Seven to Go

So eight years in EVE this month and I'm approaching another milestone: only 7 more killmails until I hit 1000 on zKillboard.

I know that is not a lot compared to a lot of old veteran PvPers like the awesome Rixx Javix but I'm happy with it nonetheless given my extreme time constraints per week. I took a moment to graph out the kills into a little chart (sorry it runs right to left, I'm too lazy to switch it around).

I highlighted a few milestones. You can see the first two Bring Me the Head of Kirith Kodachi live events in 2010 quite easily, and you can see why I fondly recall my time in Paxton Federation in the original ProviBloc back in 2009, but the most striking change in the chart starts when I joined the Gallente Militia in June of 2012. Even in a small insignificant corporation practically by myself, with the same limited playing time, my PvP activity started to climb dramatically.

This is why I sing the praises of faction warfare and Aideron Robotics; it has allowed me to turn a limited weekly game time budget into a modestly successful PvP and Fleet Commander life.

This Sunday, time to get 7 more.
