Honoured

Being on vacation not only means no blogging, it means almost no twitter or message boards or chat. So when my email reported that someone mentioned me in a tweet yesterday, after nearly two weeks of radio silence on my part, I was surprised. I opened the email and saw this tweet:

Ah yes, the Pod and Planet Fiction Contest that I wrote "Borrowed Time" for in December had its results in. I quickly navigated to the linked forum post and scanned the results only to be floored by what I saw:

Grand Prize, Kirith Kodachi. I was floored. And extremely happy.

I've written three entries to fiction contests now, the above piece, last year's entry in the P&P contest called "The Life of Nina Cruse" which failed to place (possibly due to lore violations), and the piece called "The Rifter" which won the Inspired by Images of EVE 3 contest back in 2011. Of the three, I feel Nina Cruse is the strongest one I've written despite the liberties I unintentionally took with the lore. The other two are simply bad things happening to average people in an uncaring universe, but Nina's story is actually a tragedy in that she could have avoided her doom by making different choices and accepting certain realities instead of railing against them. Regardless, I'm proud of all three pieces so please read them if you have not before.

Another thing: I swear I don't know why I keep writing sad endings for my characters. I'm not this depraved in real life, honest. I promise my next fiction entry will have a less doomed main character. (I'm not promising happy ending though.)

A huge shout out and thanks to Telegram Sam and the judges for their hard work in setting this up and judging all the excellent entries!

Now, what to spend 6 billion ISK on...

Pod and Planet Fiction Entry: The Life of Nina Cruse

This is my entry for the Pod And Planet Fiction Contest put on by Telegram Sam. Follow the link for more entries.

This piece is called "The Life of Nina Cruse" and has been written for the Eight Thousand Suns in New Eden category. Enjoy.

---------------------------------------------------------------

“I’m so sorry, Dad.”
“Oh honey, its not your fault!”
Nina closed her good eye and turned her head to the side as tears began to swell. Her father leaned over the railing of the hospital bed and stroked her hair and brushed some locks of dark hair out of her face that had fallen over her eyes, and as he did so he once again winced at the sight of the right eye swollen shut and the split lip and felt his heart break all over again. His own eyes welled up with tears and the anger in the pit of his stomach began to churn but he pushed it down. Later, he promised himself, right now Nina needs me.
“I tried to fight him off, Daddy, but he was so strong!”
“I know, Nina, I know.” She began to sob in earnest now and she reached up to grab his hand that was stroking her hair, careful not to catch her broken finger that still ached despite the medications. It hurt other places too; her face and ribs where he hit her, her head where it struck the ground when he pushed her down… and other parts she did not want to think about.
“Honey,” her father gently spoke, “its not your fault. Sometimes bad things happen to good people,” he added as his tears began to freely flow and his throat constricted. “Sometimes they happen to the best. Its not your fault.”
They stayed there for a minute holding hands and crying, comforting each other and then he sat back in his chair and wiped his eyes. Jord Cruse had not felt this helpless in a long time and despite knowing there was nothing he could do he felt still the need to say or do something, anything, to make it all better.
“I should have done something different,” Nina muttered from the bed. “Should’ve went a different way home, wore something different… something.”
“Nina, listen to me, its not your fault. Its… its his fault.”
“I should have at least taken self defense classes, martial arts or something,” she bemoaned. “You always wanted me to! I should have listened!”
Her father sighed. It ached his soul to see her torture herself up over this tragedy but he didn’t know the words that would help. “Look sweetie,” he began gently, “Sometimes there is nothing you can do. No matter what, sometimes you just can’t win. Its not your fault,” he paused as he struggled to find the right words, “its just the way it is.”
“NO!” she shouted. “I refuse to accept that this was just bad luck, daddy! No fucking way!” She clenched the sheets with her good hand and slammed it on the bed repeatedly. Then, her anger spent for the moment, she calmed down, took a few deep breaths, and whispered, “I won’t let this happen again.”

“So Miss Cruse, you’re interested in joining the State War Academy, are you?”
Nina sat in the utilitarian office facing the older woman behind the desk, her hands nervously clenched in her lap of her somber skirt and jacket ensemble she borrowed from her mother. She didn’t know why she was so nervous since almost no one was denied their application into the Academy unless they had obvious debilitating defects, and right now Nina was as physically healthy as a 19 year old could be.
The recruiting officer, a semi-retired Chief Warrant Officer whose desk name plate read “A. Danersan”, perused over Nina’s school transcript for a minute before putting it down and looking intently at the young woman in front of her. “Your grades are very good, Miss Cruse. I’m surprised you are not applying for internship at the corporate offices.” She indicated Nina’s body with a wave of one hand. “Especially one of your stature,” she added frankly.
She felt a blush on her cheeks. Nina was painfully aware that at 160 centimeters and under 50 kilos she was a lightweight compared to all of the other people in the waiting room, but she was not to be dissuaded from her goal.
“Yes ma’am, I am small but my dreams are big.” She had practiced that line for days but now that she said it to someone she thought it sounded lame. She hurriedly added, “I believe I can get into the officer stream and then apply for the Capsuleer program.”
Danersan leaned back in her chair and her eyebrows raised in surprise. “The Capsuleer program?” She surveyed Nina again. “Your marks are good, but they are not exceptional. Nothing in your listed interests suggests a proclivity for commanding a starship. I did a search on the net and your page came up.” As she picked up a tablet Nina’s cheeks flushed. “You say under the section on future plans, and I quote, ‘I hope to someday help the community leading recycling and conservation efforts’, end quote.” She put the tablet down and looked across the desk at Nina again. “That was only last year. What changed, Miss Cruse? Why go from wanting to be a conservator to joining the Academy and aspiring to be a Capsuleer? Is this some flight of fancy? Because we don’t take kindly to spurious applicants,” she added darkly.
“Well,” Nina began tentatively, “I’ve had a reality check the last few months. I’ve come to realize that we, I mean, I’m in less control than I thought. Of my destiny, you know?” Danersan said nothing and continued to watch her with an unblinking stare. Nina felt flustered but forged ahead. “I just, I just want to be in control. And staying here and working at some desk job is not going to do it for me. I need more.” She met the older woman’s gaze. “I need a challenge, I need to challenge myself, I need to be stronger. I need to win,” she finished.
She felt like withering under that unflinching gaze but she didn’t. Instead, despite the rapidly beating heart and perspiring brow, she held it and said nothing more. Finally Danersan leaned forward. “Alright Miss Cruse. You’re not the usual applicant that professes a desire to become a pod pilot but I’ve seen stranger things.” She smiled and reached for some paperwork. “Let’s get you started, shall we?”
* * * * *
Nina hit the mat hard, the right hook that had slipped past her defenses and struck her temple had jarred her with enough force to see stars as she spun to the ground. As the ringing in her ears subsided she heard some cheering and some encouragement to shake it off and get back up.
She started to get back to her knees and looked at her opponent. Cadet Donna Klofed was bouncing back and forth on the balls of her bare feet with her gloved fists at the sides of her muscular frame that was about 15 centimeters taller than Nina’s and many kilos heavier. But despite being smaller Nina had gotten a lot more physically fit in the past year since joining the academy and her she was a lot faster than a lot of her bigger classmates. She had made good use of that speed advantage in matches and that made her confident she could take on almost any of the other students, but this time, however, she underestimated her opponent’s reach with those long arms.
“You want more, Cruse?” Klofed taunted. Nina didn’t know her very well as they were in different years in the academy, Donna being one year ahead. They only shared the advanced combat training course where occasionally the instructors would have the cadets put on gloves and helmets and practice some mix martial arts fighting. Nina enjoyed the feeling of exhilaration the fighting gave her but this round against the bigger and more experienced second year cadet was starting to frustrate her.
She regained her footing and got back into her fighting stance, gloves up and on the balls of her feet. Klofed put her mouth guard back in and started circling the other fighter. The rest of the class and the instructor, an asshole of a man named Lieutenant Kenned, starting cheering them on again and offering yelled advice.
Nina knew her lankier opponent’s reach was too much of an advantage and a fast left side roundhouse kick that she blocked with her elbow confirmed that. As she danced back and circled to her right to avoid the flurry of punches that followed the leading kick she decided she would have to move in to have a chance. But before she could, Klofed saw an opening and executed a perfect spinning side kick that slipped under Nina’s defenses and struck her right in the stomach, sending her backwards and on her ass. As she rolled to her side to catch her winded breath, she cursed herself for getting hit again and wondered if she should stay down this time.
“Come on, Cruse, that all you got?” yelled Kenned from the side in his usual arrogant voice. “Maybe you should stay down this time!”
Suddenly Nina had a vision of a face. It was that man who stepped out from behind the wall on that day, that fateful day when everything changed, near the end of her senior year of school. She could hear his taunting voice, feel his fists crashing into her face and body, feel the weight as he pinned her down, feel his nails scratching her skin as he ripped her clothes. But this time Instead of frightened she just felt angry and she wanted to punch him like she could not before. Her heart pounded harder in her chest as a new dose of adrenaline coursed through her veins and she got up practically shaking with fury.
She got up into her guard position and raised her gloved fists but instead of waiting for her opponent to make the first move she rushed in, slipped right past Klofed’s hasty defensive jab and bent her knees low to turn into a full rotation of a right uppercut to the midsection. She heard a satisfying grunt of a short exhale of breath from Klofed and blocked a hurried knee as her opponent stepped back. With the extra space her retreating opponent allowed, Nina straightened her knees, stepped in and followed up with a fast left hook that beat Klofed’s glove to the side of her helmet. The solid blow spun Klofed’s head around and she flew backwards and fell on the mat.
The small crowd cheered, with the notable exception being the coach Kenned who watched with a frown. Nina offered a gloved hand to Klofed as the latter started to get back up, and it was accepted with a head shake and a grin. “Good one,” Klofed slurred around her mouth guard, “Nice and fast.”
“Thanks,” Nina replied.

“I see here that your psych profile recommended against you being allowed into the program.”
Nina focused the cameras connected to the training pod she was in on her instructor, Lieutenant Commander Zinne. It took a second for her mind to control them properly, setting the focus of each of the three separately. “Yes sir,” she synthesized through the speakers.
“And how did you convince that old battleaxe to accept your admission regardless?” Zinne asked with amusement in her voice. The “old battleaxe” she referred to was Head of Admissions of the Capsuleer Program, Captain Kirtner, who looked like he was two hundred years old and hadn’t smiled in the past hundred of them for fear of shattering his calcified visage.
“It was not easy, sir,” Nina admitted. She thought back to that meeting, sweating under that furrowed glare and hard face, pleading for her chance and insisting it was the only thing she wanted to do. The parallel to her first meeting with the recruiting officer when she wanted to join the academy was not lost on Nina; it seemed like everyone wanted to stand in her way of becoming a pod pilot someday. Nevertheless here she was as once again her passion and determination had swung the decision in her favour despite the psychological profile report on her that suggested she was not capsuleer material. “But,” she added, “I refused to be dissuaded.”
“Well,” the senior officer continued, “your academy marks are high, best in your class in most subjects, you’re on the fast track of promotions and already a Lieutenant, and you could have your pick of assignments… why do you want to be a capsuleer and risk it all if the neural transference fails?”
Nina stretched out her pod connected senses. She looked at the training facility through three different perspectives across the electromagnetic spectrum, listened on five different microphones over frequencies beyond human hearing, tasted the various particles in the air through the electro-filters, and accessed the public profiles of the Lieutenant Commander Zinne and the two assisting techs all at the same time. “The reward is worth the risk,” she intoned. No one will ever hurt me again, she thought to herself.
“I see.” She put down the report and nodded to the technicians. “In any case, your basic initiation into the pod interface is complete. You have demonstrated all the required proficiencies of the neural interface uplink so its time for your final exam. Are you ready Lieutenant?”
Within the training pseudo-capsule Nina felt her pulse quicken. The dreaded transference test that she had heard whispered about in the dorms, the step through the gate of death that led to immortality. “Yes sir, I’m ready.”
“Then let’s begin.” She indicated to the two techs to proceed and a minute later one of them said, “Transference protocol is primed, awaiting authorization for initiation.” She nodded while replying, “Acknowledged,” and she looked straight at one of the camera lens trained intently upon her.
“Lieutenant Nina Cruse, your prime neural transference procedure is ready to begin. Do you understand what this procedure entails and the risks involved?”
“Yes sir.”
“Do you waive the State of any wrongdoing in the case that something in the neural transference does not proceed as expected?”
“Yes sir.”
“Lieutenant, do you agree to proceed with the neural transference?”
“Yes sir, I do.”
“Very well then,” Zinne announced, “good luck Lieutenant. Authorization of neural transference procedure given.” She pressed her thumb pad to a scanner on the console in front of her and everything in Nina’s world went blinding white.
* * * * *
The first thing Nina was aware of was her body slipping from the cloning vat with a deluge of fluid on top a flat surface where her body stopped while the fluid (the ‘incubation suspension medium’ her memory supplied her) drained around her.
“Subject 13-734CruseN decanted,” a nearby voice recited. She tried to open her eyes and turn her head to the voice but she couldn’t move. She could not move her head, her eyelids, anything. She couldn’t breathe. She became aware of a growing pain in her chest as it screamed for oxygen.
“No auto-respiration detected,” another voice reported, “I’m hooking up the ventilator.”
As fresh oxygen flowed down the tube in her throat, she felt some measure of her panic subside for the moment. “Why can’t I move?” she asked herself.
“OK, I’ve got activity in the EEG,” the first voice said, “so the transference occurred, but the readings are fluctuating wildly.” She heard the voice come close to her head. “Lieutenant, Lieutenant Cruse, can you hear me?” She felt a light slap on her cheek. “Lieutenant?”
She wanted to scream, “Yes, yes, I’m here!” but nothing would work; it felt like nothing in her body was connected to her brain.
“Attempting pain stimulus,” the other tech’s voice said. A second later Nina felt a pinch in the instep of her foot as a sharp needle was inserted. “You fucker!” she wanted to shout as the pain lanced upwards but still she could move no part of her body.
Nina felt so helpless; she hadn’t felt this helpless since that day when she walked home from the game alone, that day he stepped out from behind the building and hit her, was on top of her, hitting her more, her breath was knocked out of her, she couldn’t fight back, panic rising as her shirt was torn off, his groping hands… all she could see was his leering grin and she couldn’t move...
She felt the anger rising then, a pure white hot rage, a desire to strike out and smash his filthy face. Every ounce of her soul and emotion was poured the effort to reconnect to her body. A finger, an eyelid, a twitch, anything…
“We’ve got a spike on the EEG,” one of the tech’s reported, “Come on, Lieutenant, are you there? Nina?”
Nothing. She could not move a single muscle. She couldn’t even cry in her despair.
“EEG is dropping. We’ve got, um,” a pause while the technician checked the timer, “three minutes and no response. We got to call it.”
A sigh from the other man who was encouraging her and he said, “Alright. Subject 13-734CruseN is not responsive, neural transference has failed, and we are disconnecting life support.” She felt her fear spike as the breathing tube was disconnected and her lungs deflated and no new air could be drawn.
“I’m sorry, Daddy”, she lamented to herself as the pain in her chest returned and the edges of her consciousness started to fade to black. “You were right. Sometimes,” she finally accepted, “sometimes you just can’t win.”

Thoughts About the Newbie Atron

So there is this contest on Battleclinic to submit an Executioner or Atron fit for a new player interested in bounty hunting which I mentioned on Saturday.

I put together a fit that I thought would work:

Its cheap, simple to use, and grows with the player.

Over at Jester's Trek Ripard posted his version of the Newbie Bounty Hunting Atron:
[Atron, Battleclinic contest]
Damage Control II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II
Small Ancillary Armor Repairer, Nanite Repair Paste
Limited 1MN Microwarpdrive I
J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I
X5 Prototype Engine Enervator
Anode Light Neutron Particle Cannon I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
[empty high slot]
Anode Light Neutron Particle Cannon I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Anode Light Neutron Particle Cannon I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Small Hybrid Burst Aerator I
Small Ancillary Current Router I
Small Low Friction Nozzle Joints I
I commented and we had a little back and forth:

I want to expand on my thoughts here, particularly about afterburners and microwarp drives. And bounties.

Ripard went with a MWD on his fit with the logic that you need to be able to be as fast or faster than a target to catch them. This is true when you are running down targets that do not want to be caught but if you are chasing a target over multiple jumps than a long point and fast lock time are more important.

I'm willing to bet that chasing a target with a bounty you are more likely to be faced with someone willing to turn and fight and in that case the MWD can become a liability.

When I am flying solo in low sec in faction warfare dominated space, my ship of preference is a afterburner fit Incursus, or if I'm feeling lucky, an afterburner fit Daredevil that operates almost the same way. Most fighting takes place near acceleration gates of plexes, either just outside or just inside. Sometimes you run into a target at a gate. If they turn and fight, a MWD may get you into range faster but if the enemy has a scram you are dead meat. If they have scram and web, you are REALLY dead meat! MWDs are great for getting tackle but not surviving a fight so I only want a MWD on a ship that will get a tackle and then have support come in to make the kill. Also, if I'm going with a MWD I'm fitting a long point to avoid scram range.

With an afterburner, if a target turns to fight then your scram and web puts you on even or better footing than your opponent if they scram and web you in return. Your afterburner still gives you some speed boost. Yes, there is some danger in getting kited and you need to be aware of that and use whatever you can to your advantage to close range to the magic scram range, or break his point and warp out to try and get better combat positions. Sitting inside a plex on the warp in point is an excellent example.

But overall, let's be realistic: a newbie player trying to do bounty hunting in ANY ship is going to die a lot to the players with bounties on them. I just think they will have a better chance or surviving in an afterburner ship than a MWD one.

Loadout Challenge: Amarr or Gallente Bounty Hunter!

Over at Battleclinic Anabaric of So Many Demons blog and Battleclinic community manager is hosting a contest:
Loadout Challenge: Amarr or Gallente Bounty Hunter!
Leave a legacy, help a new player, win prizes
Hunting bounties is dangerous solo work. Often your only backup is luck and skill, and luck just took a vacation. Your mark is good, maybe one of the best, but you know you’re better. Hi-sec, lo-sec, 0.0, it doesn’t matter…you always bring home your prey. For the right price.
It’s time to teach a new player what you know. Put your best Atron or Executioner Bounty Hunter loadout together that a 45-day old player can use. We’re going to clean up New Eden with a fresh crop of Bounty Hunters, and your loadout advice is gonna make that happen.
The Contest:
Post an Executioner or Atron loadout here!. It must be:
Flyable by a character who’s about 45 days old, especially characters who use these packsThe loadout must be 100% flyable within current game mechanics
Must include a rationale explaining how to fly the loadout
Full stats are highly encouraged. Use EFT.
Link your fit back to this thread!

Redesign the Eagle Contest - Update

The Eagle contest is still running (remember, with bigger prizes!) and runs until the end of the month. Here is a listing of the current entries I am aware of in no particular order.

1) Ripard Teg (in comment):
I wrote about the Eagle some weeks back in both the rail and blaster roles:
http://jestertrek.blogspot.com/2011/10/fit-of-week-utter-fail.html

tl;dr: Eagles are under-powered and SLOW.

My conclusions, though not explicitly stated in that piece, are:
* Increase power grid by +100;
* Add a 6th turret slot;
* Remove the missile slots;
* Remove the HAC range bonus, replace with a speed bonus.
* Create a 280mm Railgun module (with associated meta, faction, and T2 modules).

I'm going to go against the grain and say that I like the look of the Moa hull just as it is. Is it ugly and symmetrical? Sure! But it's ugly and symmetrical in a way that makes sense for a Caldari spacecraft. I might tweak the engines somewhat to make the propulsion look more balanced, similar to what was done to the Raven. But I actually like the base hull. It's got a Serenity from Firefly feel to it.

2) Logan Fyreite: From mehgle to EAGLE!

3) Ender (in comment):
From: Tsilo Ralttilo (Head of Ishukone Corporation Security Division)
To: Ekulela Siakkawai (Head of Ishukone Corporation R&D Division)
CC: Landea Vrankef (Head of Ishukone Watch Security Division), Mens Reppola (CEO of Ishukune)
Subject: Eagle Class Heavy Assault Cruiser
Classification: Confidental

Dear Eku,

Since the recent deployment of Naga class Battlecruisers, Hyasyoda had been gaining an increasing market share on the equipment provided to Caldari Navy. Today I have witnessed a discussion among our own troops in Ishukone Watch on whether our Eagles should be replaced with Nagas or not.

As a person with military background I couldn't agree more with the idea(Naga is a damn good ship) but as the head of ICSD I know this would spell the beginning of the end for Ishukone's part in supplying Caldari Navy.

So I joined to the discussion with my subordinates. An hour later we came up with the conclusion that Eagle needs to be revised. Here are the main ideas that came up during the discussion:

* We all feel that Eagle was, is and always should be a sniping rail platform that can reach beyond 200k range. There are 3 basic requirements of being a sniper. Range, Volley Damage and Mobility.

* Right now Eagle is mainly outranged due to presence of BS class weapons. Those bigger weapons can reach further than eagles optimized weapon range. Still, being with smaller signature guns that have higher tracking has its advantages so most of the soldiers were content with the range Eagle provides. There were some concerns about acquiring a lock on targets at 200k. Right now Eagle needs to spend considerable resources to be able to lock on targets far away. The sensor boosters used for this purpose could be changed to more benefical modules, if the onboard targetting system can be improved for both range AND locking times.

* The volley damage of an Eagle at 200k using spike ammo is lower than what some frigates do. What the sniper pilots love doing is making a "Hit'n-Warp" run. Right now it is "Tickle'n-Try to Warp, get tackled and die". I know we are limited to Hybrid weaponry in Eagle. But an optimization of firing timers to provide us with two(three?) consecutive weapon activations with longer(much longer?) cooldown times would be much more desirable on this platform.

* The mobility of Eagle remains a bigger issue. Align times are simply too long. Many of our pilots stated that they would prefer having a faster and nimbler ship to optimized shield resistances. Is it possible to divert some of the shield optimization routines on energy core to engines to prodive this.

* Most of our experienced (read: Old) pilots are complaining that sniping has been dead since Gallente scientists introduced new means of probing. Eagle is already benefiting from its smallish signature. But we believe you guys can optimize our shields even further to reduce the signature radius. We also believe an increase in gravimetric sensor strength will make our ship much harder to scan.

* One crazy guy had an idea we all laughed about. But I'll put it here regardless. It was about the regular cloaking devices. The stealth bombers utilize special subroutines to be able to lock immediately after decloaking. We were wondering if it was possible to implement these subroutines to Eagles. Crazy right? Initially I thought so too. But whatever changes you come up with Eagle, its competitors will be on a different scale and league. This will make Eagle unique again.

* Oh and one other guy suggested something about changing the hull. I've sent him to run solo surveliance runs in Angel space...in an ibis.

These were the main points that came up in our discussion. I know our company has a good relationship with Hyasyoda but if we don't intervene, Hyasyoda is going to be the main contractor for Caldari Navy in a few months. We need to make sure they don't. With these changes to Eagle we just might do that.

Best Regards,
Tsilo Ralttilo
Head of ICSD

TL;DR version:

Increase Base Locking range to 150k
Increase Base Scan Res to 450mm
Increase Damage by 200% Reduce RoF to 1/3. (Same DPS 3 times volley)
Change the shield resistance bonus to a mass reduction bonus.
Reduce Base Signature to 115
Increase Base Gravimetric Sensor Str to 24
Reduce Sensor Calibration timme after decloaking by 100%

The ship hull screams caldari. Bird beak, non-symmetrical. Please don't touch it.

4)  aidenmourn: Talons of Doom: A Re-Imagined Blaster Eagle

5) Justin Cody (in comment):
I'll pencil something up...scan it in to PS and maybe get something resembling creativity out of it.

In the end it has to remain Caldari, so a long range standoff rail platform. The Moa also has missile slots which are not useless but are under-utilized

10% to hybrid optimal range is fine, drop the shield resist bonus for 5% to damage/level, drop the missile hard points...add 6th turret hardpoint and pump up the base grid by 40. The Moa can sacrifice tank in a sniper encounter to hit well and hard.

The Eagle should also have 6 turret slots, give it a 25m3 drone bay instead of 15 on the moa. HAC bonuses: 10%/level to hybrid falloff/level and 7.5% to hybrid tracking/level. This will let its 250's hit well and hard from nearly any range. Make it the long range gunboat of choice for cruisers.

6) Kitaro Phoenix (in an evemail):
This is my entry the Eagle contest... but it really ended up more as both an Eagle / Cerberus proposal as they share similar issues.

In general I believe that those who are trying to return the Eagle to it's sniper glory really need to let go. That role is now served very well by T3 Battle Cruisers and Maelstroms. I don't think that the Eagle can really be changed to match them.

Instead let us attempt to bring the Eagle (actually Caldari HACs in general) in line with the other race's HACs.

Proposal #1:
HACs with dual bonuses related to range should only have 1 bonus to range. (Cerberus, Eagle)

This will mean they no long are able to shoot missiles @ 180km or hit with rails @ 145km (without any tracking enhancement). This is just fine because they can't lock at those ranges anyway.

On the Eagle the 10% optimal bonus (per level of Caldari Cruiser) should be replaced with a 5% rate of fire.

On the Cerberus the 10% bonus to Heavy and Heavy Assault flight times (per level of Heavy Assault ships) should be replaced with a 7.5% reduction in signature radius.

This gives a close range brawler Eagle slightly more dps than Deimos with mildly better range or similar DPS in the medium long range (30km-80km) role with rails compared to a Beam Zealot.

The Cerberus can do a similar Medium range HAM fit or a longer HML fit doing dps comparable to Pulse and Beam Zealot respectively. The signature radius reduction will give a Cerberus a similar signature to the Zealot and increase it's survivability.

Proposal #2:
Both the Caldari HACs are slow. Increase the Eagle speed by 35 m/s (which makes it comparable to the Deimos/Zealot) and the Cerberus by 15 m/s (comparable to the Ishtar/Sacrilege).

Proposal #3:
Since they are no longer snipers, drones are useful! Give the Eagle 25m3 of space and bandwidth while leaving the Cerb with a token 10 m3 drone bay.

This would make Caldari HACs have the 2nd smallest drone bay instead of the first.

Contest - Redesign The Eagle

Rixx Javix over at Eveoganda bemused the doom of the Zealot and Vagabond at the hands of the new Oracle and Tornado and when he ended the post asking about other ships, in the comments I said this:
Naga: about third(!) of the price of a Rokh, with same range bonus, and 25% damage increase over the battleship. Sure, it can't tank like the Rokh but its more agile and cheaper and does not require BS 5.

Not to mention the Eagle (which was dead already) will never see the light of day now.
And then on twitter Rixx responded:
good point about the poor sodden Eagle. Amazing how bad is it that it doesn't even get remembered? So sad
Yes, the Eagle even with the improvements to Hybrid weapons still is lackluster and now with the Naga available its even more undesirable. Sure, it can tank better but with Battlecruisers V a Naga can snipe out to 194 km with 400 DPS while at HAC IV an Eagle only gets around 156km optimal and 180 DPS. At approximately twice the price.

[EveNews24 Editor: For those who do not like the comparison between the Eagle and the Naga, I have reworded the comparison.  At lvl 5 skills, the Eagle can hit at 146+15km range while the Naga can hit at 194+30km range with 33% more damage without any gunnery modifying modules or implants and the Naga can fit 8 guns while the Eagle is stuck with 5 guns for twice the price. ]

Sure, there are advantages to being smaller and having superior tracking but overall the Eagle is not what you would call a desirable ship. On top of all that game mechanics, the Moa is one of the most reviled ship hulls in the game.

So here is your chance to be game designer AND art lead on the Eagle makeover.

Redesign the Eagle Contest!
Somebody Save Me!!!!
The goal is to produce a description of how you would change the Eagle (and/or all of the Heavy Assault Cruiser class) to make it viable in the new Crucible age AS WELL AS one or more images of a hull redesign for the Moa/Eagle/Gila/Onyx ships very much like how the Scoprion and Maller have been completely redone..

The submission deadline is Feb 1, 2012 and I will be judging the entries.

1st Place Entry - 1 x PLEX
2nd Place Entry - 1 x HAC of your choice
3rd Place Entry - 1 x Battlecruiser of your choice
EDIT: I've partnered with EveNews24 and they kindly added to the pot so that the prizes are now:

1st Place Entry - 1 x Pirate Battleship (list)
2nd Place Entry - 1 x Pirate Cruiser (list)
3rd Place Entry - 1 x Pirate Frigate (list)

For the mechanics change, it doesn't have to be drastic or super detailed in order to be a good entry. The same goes for the hull redesign; a simple pencil sketch will suffice as much as a professional graphic artist entry as long as I feel the design is cool and evokes the Caldari esthetic.

This and That

I made a stupid mistake yesterday which left me angry with myself all day, but things improved in the evening with a nice loot drop. Want details? Listen to Broadcasts from the Ninveah episode 19!

Yeah yeah, shameless self promotion and all that. I could have easily made that story and the accompanying thoughts on the difficultly of destroying POSes into blog posts, but I wanted some relevant and hopefully interesting content for the podcast. It leads to the question of why bother doing a podcast at all? Well, I consider myself a successful Eve blogger but the fact of the matter is that podcasting reaches a larger audience with less effort, and I think that the two in conjunction have the best of both worlds.

So why am I so concerned with reaching a large audience? Well, it comes down to one simple fact: I like people. I like talking with people, I like being known as someone people can come talk to. I like being considered an expert in Eve Online (as much as any single person can be) and I like to share information to help other people enjoy the game more. My motto of "Do Stuff With Others" applies here because two way communication is a way of doing stuff. I feel like the podcast has given me some rapport with the other podcasters, even though their effort into podcasting is obviously much greater.

Another reason I'm doing the podcast is for the experience and practice. I have issue with public speaking for a variety of reasons, and although I can type up a storm and feel good about what I wrote, I can think about what to say and then trip over my own tongue trying to get it out, usually failing horribly. The goal is for the podcast to grease those thoughts to mouth wheels in my brain and help me speak with more confidence.

Anyways, what I'm trying to do is use material for the podcast that fits better with the storytelling and stick the more visual and information heavy stuff in the blog. It doesn't always work that way, but meh whatever. Listeners and readers get what they pay for. ;)

In a related note, I decided to start a public channel where people can come and hang out. It seems a lot of the cool bloggers and podcasters have their own channels so I thought what the hey, it costs nothing to set up. So feel free to drop in the channel "Ninveah" in game and give me or one of my numerous alts a wave and a hello. I'll warn you I'm not online a lot, but I'll be using the message of the day for notes and announcements and you can find me in there usually most Monday evenings (GMT-5) as that's my gaming night.

A question for podcast listeners. Do you think I need outro music to end the episode? And what's your thought about music during the podcast, low level background stuff? I'm not partial to the background music because it tends to get in the way sometimes of hearing the speakers (I'm looking at you Jade) but I feel like the end of my episodes need something more. Hmmm....

I've got about 62 screenshots to go through, not including the five I sent to The Ancient Gaming Noob for his screenshot contest, and then I'll post the best ones up this week. I got some good shots including me in a Tengu absorbing Citadel Torpedo hits from an NPC outpost.
