I Was There - Blog Banter

"In recent months, the relationship between CCP and it's customers has been the subject of some controversy. The player-elected Council of Stellar Management has played a key role in these events, but not for the first time they are finding CCP difficult to deal with. What effect will CCP's recent strategies have on the future of EVE Online and it's player-base? What part can and should the CSM play in shaping that future? How best can EVE Online's continued health and growth be assured?"
I was there.

I was there when the new tier III battleships and tier II battlecruisers were released and changed the face of the game forever. What would Eve be with the Drake, Hurricane, Maelstrom, and Abaddon?

I was there when the graphics were overhauled and Eve went from being pretty to being drop-dead gorgeous.

I was there when the Drone regions were opened up and a new land rush began.

I was there when planets were redone and looked so amazing and real.

I was there when the awesome Empyrean Age downtime occurred and factional warfare began with a bang.

I was there when the wormholes opened and the Sleepers awakened, and I read reports of pilots getting lost in space for days or forever, leaving empty ships behind as they podded themselves to escape.

I was there when the Sansha incursions started.

I was there.

Eve is about space and spaceships. I don't care that you are developing Incarna and the Noble Exchange, CCP. In fact, I support you in that endeavour. But you can't stop working on the spaceships. We came for the spaceships, we'll stay for the spaceships, but we won't stay for a bar on a station.

I don't give a rat's ass about the CSM, CCP's communication strategies, or the colour of my avatar's pants.

I care about spaceships. Give me more reasons to say I was there, or I might end up saying "I used to be there."

  1. Amen brother. I was going more this way until I read your post, so I went a slightly different way, but I linked you. I don't care much for playing Barbies, I like my spaceships.

  2. As of a week ago, I am now saying "I used to be there."

Perhaps I'll come back someday, but I actually doubt it. Had some good times, but IRL has gotten in the way.

  3. Absolutely agree! Still chugging away in-game, but having cancelling a few accounts I'm seeing less and less motivation to keep paying the monthly sub bill. Even if someone else is paying the sub bill via PLEX.

  4. Kirith, brother man. I've always enjoyed your blog but today I'm saddened to see you take such a low road to make your point.

All I'm getting out of your post is "I was here first so I get first dibs on everyone elses game".

Perhaps I'm wrong but I'd love to hear better reasoning behind it.

  5. Echnonation: I have no idea how you got that out of my post.

I'm not saying that developing Eve in new direction is not allowed. In fact, I support Incarna development and more station interiors and game play.

I'm simply saying me (and many others) were attracted to and played this game for Spaceship content and that by not continuing to develop such content they risk alienating the playerbase.

In others words, you dance with the one that brought ya.

If you see that as "I was here first so I get first dibs on everyone elses game" I say you are wrong. I don't want gameplay removed or static, I want development of Eve on all fronts, not simply one. Right now, Incarna is getting all the love and Eve is languishing with a skeleton team (regardless of their dedication).

After spending a few hours browsing various blogs and eve news articles, it's refreshing to hear an optimistic voice for once. There are so many awesome things about the game in its current iteration. Yet so many people recently seem to be decrying CCP's lack of vision and focus. Coming from a software development background as one who designs and builds large projects all the time, it's apparent that it's the players, not CCP, who are short-sighted.

The last few expansions have been devoted to laying a necessary framework for much larger goals. Tyrannis by iteself was quite a lackluster expansion. PI? That's it? Dust won't be available on the PC, but I can see a huge impact it can have on the Eve universe. And without the planetary interface introduced with Tyrannis, that wouldn't be possible.

The only complaint I have is that a few more 'shiny' things could have been introduced along with all the more mundane groundwork in recent expansions. But I'm willing to be patient, wait it out, and enjoy the game in its current form while I watch it develop.

  7. For the record, I'd stay just to hang at a bar in a station; but then if that gets boring, I don't know. Exploration sites in Syndicate have been keeping me going since the fall of the NC. Eve is stagnating, but then, I like things quiet.

Plus in space, no one can hear you sing.

  8. Double post!!
    Wish list:
T3 battleships with jump drive Subsystem
T3 frigates with interdiction nullifier Subsystem
T3 cruiser covert subsystem to allow covert cynos
    T2 Myrmidon with 375 m3 drone bay!
Black ops buff (full cloaky, maybe at the expense of ehp, ideally not)
Even MORE 0.0 space, maybe a new npc race
    Rorqs in hisec!! (keep dreaming?)
    AoE ship and cargo scanners
    Salvage drones
    Jovian exotic dancers

  9. I can hardly find a reason to log in to EVE at the moment.
