Flying Solo

So last Sunday when I was flying in low sec solo I found the Myrmidon unwieldy, unable to chase Faction Warfare frigates in small site with size limited acceleration gates, and getting caught and destroyed in a gate camp. So I'm thinking about going for a smaller ship to cruise around low sec in. Naturally, this will pose some problems when thinking about gate guns but I will give smaller a try to see what happens.

I have a plethora of choices in terms of frigate to pick from, since I have all four races Frigate skill to level 5 and all small weapons (hybrids, lasers, projectiles, drones, and missiles) to tech II levels.

My first instinct was Caldari, maybe a rocket Hawk or blaster Harpy, but concerned about the need for tackle as well as defenses turned me off a little. So I turned to Gallente and saw I have a nice little Ishkur already to go.
Pew pew!
Or should I splurge and go faction with a Daredevil like the one Kane Rizzel uses successfully?

Tempting to get a Dramiel but I hate following the Flavour of the Month crowd. Still, over 6 km/sec is tempting...

Or should I save my ISK and follow the Way of the Rifter?

Thoughts and comments would be appreciated...

  1. How about a firetail? You can make a pretty good kiting fit and keep all the speed it has to offer, or you can make it a standard MSE II brawler, or you can armor tank it and make it web heavy, etc.

If you like Caldari the Navy Hookbill has the mids for ewar and tank. Though it can be tough to fit w/o good skills.

Controls range, does nice damage, is pretty quick and has a nice tank. There is no frigate I will not engage in this except daredevils.

  4. Agree with the hookbill. its a damn good frig. IIRC you can fit a BCU II on the dual web version for more dps.

  5. Kirith, you have the ISK. Fly the Dramiel before they nerf it :))

Go with the rifter. It may not be fancy but it can take on things like the hookbill. Mite I suggest a duel rep fit, they always tend to be fun to fly.

Fitting is TIGHT! Dual webs give great range control and often allow you to escape from a fight that is going bad.

    Go autocannon or go home.

  9. Instead of frigates, would cruiser hulls work for the gates you are crashing? If so, I would consider a Cynabal or Vagabond for solo hunting with good survivability.

I really like the Vengeance, it's really slow for a frig but on the upside the above Hookbill can't break it's tank ;-)

On the cheap frigate front a nice alternative (for a high SP pilot) is the Merlin, it's often overlooked but if you have the skills for both it's weapon platforms it's a pretty mean frig.

  11. Quay's wrong with T2 cruisers? I know it's not what you asked but drugs will get raped by the gateguns and a mining or vagabond will last long enough to rake in that kill you are looking for. . .

  12. If he is after FW people in their plexes, than a T2 cruiser can only enter the very biggest sites which are rarely done and if they are done, there are often more than one millitia guy in them as the rats do a good amount of dps.

He can either go T1 Frig including faction frigs to enter every plex or go T1 cruiser (again including faction) or T2 Frig for the medium plexes as the chances to find someone solo in those is not so bad.

Personally i would indeed use the hookbill, because it is cool if i could fly it.
I allways did use however this:

As the name reads, it can solo ruptures. And because every Rupture pilot knows, that he is in the best T1 cruiser of all times, they will engage you all the time.
If you manage to keep them between 8 and 9 km distance their guns wont hurt anymore thanks to the TD. Also having a MWD and a T2 cloak allows the experienced lowsec pilot to dodge every gatecamp short of an 5 Sebo Drake to actually reach that plex.
Of course turn it offline once in system to get the scan resolution back, but i should not even have to mention that.
Man, i feel like going back to lowsec now ^^

fake-edit: With todays onboard scanner, you will hardly ever need the probe launcher and if you are not planning to do fw-plexes yourself but only wanna gank them, then you wont even need the onboard one.
