Operation Trident

Is making super deep safe spots using log off emergency warping mechanics an exploit? I don't think CCP has classed it as such but I've heard rumblings that they are changing the mechanics to prevent it from occurring in Tyrannis which I oppose as I think they are far too restrictive with the game mechanics already. If I want to warp 100 AU in a random direction towards nothingness... LET ME!

But I digress...

The utility of ultra deep safe spots is unquestionable, even if they are not perfectly safe due to the probing mechanics we have now. If you have a ship with a cloak any old safe spot is good as the next. But if you are uncloaked or are cynoing in a fleet, ultra deep spots are better because they are less likely to be probed out in case of the former and take precious time to warp to in the case of the latter.

And when you have a supercarrier that cannot dock, an ultra deep safe spot is a good idea to jump into a system so you have time to warp away and cloak up before any curious hostiles arrive. Of course, as soon as that cyno beacon shows up on everyone's overview many AUs out of the normal system space, they will bookmark it and it won't be so safe next time so having multiple deep safes to use is always a good idea.

Last night I had two 20 minute sessions which I decided to dedicate to practicing the making of these ultra deep spots. It took a few false starts but eventually I was getting it to work and before I knew it I was over 100 AUs from the nearest celestial object. Excellent. Now that the process is understood I can make some more as its always good to multiple options and backup plans.

  1. I agree, We should be able to warp anywhere in a system (within reason).
With the system map, they already have the basic UI to allow us to pick an arbitrary location in a solar system to warp to. Though being allowed to go 1000's of AU from the star may be a bit too much.

I agree, sort of. I think there should be a way to warp to a point to create a deep safe using some UI mechanism. I don't subscribe to the idea of using a log-off mechanic to attain one. When you log off you are leaving the game, and when you log back in you shouldn't have something you wouldn't have had otherwise.

Like research points? Completed industrial jobs? Skill training? Market buy and sell orders completed? ;) Just pointing out that your objection seems to have many accepted exceptions.

Not at all. Skill points, indy jobs, market orders will proceed just the same if you stay logged in as if you log out. So when you log out you aren't getting something you wouldn't have had if you'd remained logged in. You don't get any bonuses to these from logging out. But you do get a bonus to a deep safe through the log-off trick, which I disagree with.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't think of a day-to-day game activity where you get get something more/better by being logged off versus staying logged in.

  6. What about the skill queue? Purposely added to allow you to start a skill even though logged off.

I get your point, and if it was giving me an unbustable safe spot or loads of free isk, I'd agree. But I feel we should have this ability regardless, so I don't feel bad about using emergency warp mechanics to achieve it.

Skill queue - good point. But even that works the same if you remain in-game. It doesn't depend on the log-off to work. (I'm splitting hairs here, I know.)

But your point is taken - it's not unbustable, so it's not a big deal. Not the same as logoffski to avoid getting killed.

  8. I would have to say Luccul is right,
DS bm's made through logging off are the only mechanic that give a benefit from the being logged off. All the other stuff mentioned so far it doesn't matter if you're logged in or logged out for them to function/be awarded nor do they care how you log off.

That said, imo it shouldn't be removed untill they give us the ability to move around a system arbitrarily.

From what I've seen discussed (may dig up the link later), this ability is getting removed in Tyrannis. So create those spots now...
