Painting Challenge - Progress Report #1

I was talking to Corey on MSN talking about painting the farseer up when he mentioned he was thinking of painting the same model. I didn't realize he had the same old Farseer as I did:

I was struck with inspiration and right then and there challenged him to a painting duel. We both have until the end of November to paint the same model and then have them judged on Deep Space. First though, I quickly finished the Support platform Shadow Weaver and crew:

Then this past weekend I dove in on Farseer Ianthus. I wanted pretty much the same colour scheme as before that matches the psykers of my craftworld: red and black with ivory white for the wraithbone rune armour, but I wanted to do a much better job than last time I painted him over 5 years ago at least. So I mapped out the main colours on Saturday and on Sunday I started applying the highlights to make sure the idea in my head is going to work out.

Front (with flash and without):

Rear:

This is very early in the process and there is not one part of the model that can be considered complete, so don't fret over the mistakes you see. There are only two areas I am concerned over at the moment: the Ghost Helm and the sword hilt. I have some ideas about what to do with the Helm, but I am almost completely lost on what colours to do the hilt in. Any ideas would be welcome.

Update

Painting didn't happen again. Kim's physio appointment in the afternoon got cancelled so I got home at the regular time and had to cook dinner, my speciality of home made Mac and Cheese (so good!).

But since my game with Corey next week got put off I'm not in a big hurry.

I'm planning a Forge World order next month to get me some of those sweet new Epic Hellblades. I don't really care one way or another if Zac and crew make rules for them in the new list, I'll use them as swiftdeaths if I have to. Sweet.

I promise to start painting again tonight!

I had to work late last night so didn't get a chance to clean up the rest of the stuff from the tournament. Yeesh. Plan to get that done tonight and finish off the Shadow Weaver crew.

Tenth Golden Marine was a success

See pictures here.

Let me tell you, starting at 7 and finishing at 6 is a long day. My Epic Chaos Marines lost two close games against Marines and Tyranids before pulling out a turn 4 victory against Orks.

Grrrr....

Slow progress. Last night I was late getting home due to picking up the awesome broadsword from Mr Antz as a prize for the 40K tournament on Sunday. I found some places to touch up on the Shadow Weaver tuesday, and I hope to find some time tonight to finish the last of the crew and turret.

Shadow Weaver Is Complete

But no pics yet. I finished it last night after a weekend of travelling and I expect to finish the guardians and turret this week as well. Pictures to follow.

Ack! Update

Sorry I haven't been posting. Thanksgiving weekend put the kibosh on any warhammer related efforts and while I have been making progress this week with touchups, fixups, and priming the farseer, nothing picture-worthy jumped out. So a week's worth of updates (sorry no pics):

- Farseer stripped nicely down to his lead (that's right, lead!) surface. I finally got brave enough to fix his stubby pointed finger that was malformed in production too. He's next on the list and I'm working out how to paint him. I think I'm going with the same colours of black and red, but just using my better skills now to do so.

- Shadow Weaver is nearing completion. Just have to do two red gems, a power cable, and I'm done. The crew needs a bit more work but they are getting close to being finished as well.

- The turret is 75% done. Just have a cable, lots of red gems, and touchups on the highlighting.

- In Epic news, my new space marine bikes and battle company arrived. From the battle company I took four jump pack marine stands and four stands of devestators for raptors and havocs respectively. This completes my infantry requirements for Epic so the rest of the marines are for sale (24 stands of tactical / devestators). For epic, the only thing else I want is another ravager battle titan. The search begin today!

- Yesterday I got in a quick game of Horus Heresy with Andrew. It remains as one of the best games Games Workshop ever produced because it has awesome theme, simple rule mechanics with lots of unit variation and strategies to apply, and lots of flexibility for overall tactics. I lost due to the World Eaters sneaking in the back of the palace and taking the inner palace while Horus and his marines secured the last of the four space ports. Oops. Great fun.

That's all for now folks. Enjoy.

Wraithbone

OK, since last update I tried my hand at gems on the Shadow Weaver, I painted the several coats of ivory on all the pieces, the flesh on the faces, and did the outlining of the black on the turret and shadow weaver. Next is outlining the red.

Turret:

Crew:

Shadow Weaver:

Time to get the farseer out of the dip and start painting him, these pieces should be done by the end of next week.

Frustration

My game with Sean tonight got cancelled because he is busy until after 6pm and wants to meet up at GMX instead. Now I'm scrambling to find an opponent so that my only free evening this month is not wasted.

Grrrr...

Eldar Progress Continues

Black and red were the watchwords this weekend. Next step is grey and wraithbone on the turrey and Shadow Weaver gun, while I'm going to practice gems on the antigrav platform.

These two guys got red along with a light blue highlight on the edges of the armour to bring out definition more.

Poor little farseer in the dip, next on the list to be painted.

For Urb: the blue paint I use.
