Tranquility Down!

Poor CCP.

They decided to move the servers to a more modern data centre and unforeseen issues with the Database server during testing has caused the downtime to stretch almost 24 hours longer than expected. Of course the haters pour out of the woodwork to decry CCP's ineptitude which is hardly fair since we don't know exactly what went wrong and what could have been done to prevent it. Then you have the people complaining about the lack of information but really I prefer they spend their effort fixing the issue and then tomorrow telling me what went wrong.

This is the first time in a long time CCP has had a downtime so much longer than expected and I bet the skill training horse with a 12 hour buffer for my alt. Whoops! Oh well. At the end of the day, we need to remember that us paying customers didn't get about 50 cents worth of playtime we paid for.

This is the high tech world, accidents/bugs happen and when they do fixing them can be an effort and a half. Let's wait and see what the incidence was and if common sense could have prevented it before stringing them from the highest tree.

For me it's not the extended downtime that bothers me (I know from experience how big things can go wrong in IT) but that they ALWAYS underestimate how long these big projects will take.

When I read their over optimistic prediction yesterday that downtime could actually be shorter than expected it made me smile. I just knew what was likely to happen, although I wasn't expecting them to miss the mark by this much!

  2. I work in IT and so when I read their blog about the server move and their expectation of 6 hours of DT, I smiled to myself and went "more like 36."

I don't mind though. I only log in every few days anyway right now due to IRL keeping me away. Next skill doesn't finish until Friday night at 6:30, so everything should be copacetic by then.

  3. considering the fact that on regular extended downtimes its usually just a software upgrade and/or minor hardware changes and those are usually heavily tested on sisi before release. i'm not surprised that when moving to a new location they experienced some technical dificulties when trying to bring the server up. whatever they were im glad they solved them as quickly as they did, and a 12 hour skill buffer is never good for a dt kir :) try to make it at least 2 days if not a month hehe. i made a similar mistake last dt where i lost a couple hours of training on my main toon.
