Eve First Impressions

Andrew over at Of Teeth and Claws has been trying out Eve Online so he can understand what all the fuss is about. Its a good accurate review of his issues in the New Player Experience and his thoughts about Eve in general.

I hope he gets a chance for some good PvP before he stops playing so he can at least experience that part of the game. Maybe I'll go prod him towards Eve University again, they often have PvP classes.

I hope he does too. It takes awhile to reframe you mind around PvP. It seems so scary and intimidating until you get a handle on the fact that a) you will lose ships, whether you actively pvp or not and b) losing ships doesn't actually hurt all that much. Unless you are c) ignoring the golden rule: if you can't afford to lose it, don't fly it. (-:

  2. Is good to see that Andrew is giving EVE a try. His review is a very honest one and I agree with the shortcomings of the tutorials he listed. Not explaining the combat overview or the directional scanner were big oversights by CCP. As a new player I have to say that CCP has to be very grateful to the community. Without the help of the guys in the Rookie Channel, or corps like EVE Uni or blogs like this must of us wouldn't stay long enough to see how great this game is.

The only thing that I disagree with is this comment about EVE :
"EVE Online seems to encourage players to behave badly towards each other". No. EVE doesn't encourage it. EVE just lets humans be humans.
