Since getting the Adeptus Titanicus core set for the titans, I've become intrigued by the game itself. Lots of people rave about it. So I decided to try a basic game using the models from the box.
On one team we have the Reaver titan Nian, Warhound titan Akhlut, and Ceratus Knight Lancer Sarpedon.
On the other side, Reaver Raum, Warhound Kludde, and Knight Hector.
Team Raum with a balanced deployment. There are three objectives to claim across the centre of the map.
Nian looks to dominate a major road with her volcano cannon and turbo lasers while Akhlut goes to flank.
There are four major roads, two running east to west, two running north to south. Nian has excellent sight lines on the south road.
But she is also exposed to the rapid fire gatling blaster and missiles of Raum. But more concerning is the warhound Kludde sheild shredding weaponry.
In the North, Hector looks to try and ambush Akhlut.
Turn 1, Nian advances.
Akhlut pushes the reactor to move faster into the North.
As Knight Hector looks to flank Akhlut, Sarpedon moves into to support, leaving Nian to hold the road alone. Nian's shields get hit hard by the numerous nice from the two opposing titans and concern begins to set in as her return fire is high strength but low volume and the voids hold.
She is unable to bring down the voids of even smaller Kludde. In hindsight, giving her a volcano cannon, melta cannon, and turbo laser destructor was a bad combo when she is unsupported by something else to bring down the shields first.
Raum and Kludde one the other hand have no trouble, even with the cover penalty, bringing down Nian's shields and disabling the melta cannon.
Nian can only brace as she takes further hits to the head and legs.
Akhkut began to flank as the two knights battled each other, but her plasma blast gun shots were wildly off.
Turn 3, Raum secures the south objective while Kludde begins to try and get a better angle. Nian desperately backs up.
Can Akhlut save the day by getting behind Raum and Kludde?
In damage control phase, Nian repeairs the melta cannon.
Knight Hector is damaged but still fighting.
Turn 4, Kludde and Raum continue to close in on damaged Nian. Desperate, Nian charges and collides with Kludde, the smaller titan taking many strength 8 hits to the leg which almost buckles. Stablizers are damages and locomotors seized!
In the centre, the two knights exchange blows but Hector comes out on top!
Akhlut completes the flanking maneuvure and opens fire into the rear of Raum but the mighty Reaver's shields shrug off the hits with ease. Too little too late.
Raum opens fire into the exposed and unshielded rear of Nian but here the armour holds enough that Nian still stands! Her reactor is leaking and void shields are burned out permamently, but she fights on.
Nian swings its melta cannon in a short arc and cuts Kludde's damage leg off! Kludde spins, its weapons firing wildly, and even falls on Nian's leg, but she shrugs all the damage off.
In the end phase of turn 4, Nian's leaking reactor finally breaches containment and explodes, the proud titan finally toppling in a burned out heap. Victory to Team Raum!
Lessons Learned
I built the models without knowing the rules and I can confidently say that Nian has too much high strength weapons, and not enough shield stripping ones. On the other hand, Raum was able to bring down his counterpart's shields easily, but even into the exposed rear lacked the punch to cause fatal damage (eventually the reactor leak did the work, but it was a close thing). I'll probably swap the carapace weapons of the two, giving Raum more strength 8 was the Turbolaser descructors, and Nian can use the missiles to bring down shields so the volcano cannon and melta cannon can do the work.
Definitely felt like two on one was a tough matchup, next time Nian won't stand alone.
