March of the Undead Robots

I threw out a net for a game this week and a regular Deep Spacer who I have never played stepped up and said "Sure". Thus it was that last night I found myself at the bunker facing down Tyranus_Dominus and his Necron horde.

1500 pts, Seek & Destroy

Eldar:
Farseer
10 Scorpions in Wave Serpent
6 Scorpions
10 Guardians with Warlock in Wave Serpent
6 Jetbikes
5 Pathfinders
2 Vypers
5 Dark Reapers
Fire Prism

Necrons:
Lord on Foot
3 x 12 Warriors
9 Immortals
5 Destroyers
Monolith

T_D deployed his monolith on one flank in cover and I refused that flank and went hard to the other with only the Dark Reapers in cover in the middle. The warriors and immortals stretched across the table and the game began.

The first two turns were heavily in the favour of the Eldar, with the Dark Reapers mowing down warriors and the Pathfinders, Vypers, and grav tanks contributing as much as possible. At the end of turn 2 he failed 8 out of 10 We'll Be Back rolls and that set the stage for turn 3.

As the monolith continued to advance, its blast template kept scattering off target. The jetbikes took some fire but half the squad remained to drive into a necron squad where they tied each other up until Scorpions with power claw arrived to relieve the pressure and knock the warriors down. The smaller squad of scorpions assaulted the exposed Necron lord but failed to wound him and instead got sliced and diced and then run down.

Turn 4 I unleashed a fury of firepower into the Necrons guarding the Lord and knocked down most of the squad. Many get back up but Marc's getting nervous and chose to use the Monlith Portal to get more. From there he nuked the farseer and killed two Dark Reapers. I countered by pouring as much firepower into that knot of warriors as I could muster, knocking down 8 of them and wounding the lord. The Lord with the remaining warrior then failed the break test and began falling back. Enough warriors stood back up to put the squad over half but I was within 6 inches and drove them away. The monolith extracted revenge pounding the guardians and destroying a wave serpent, but I had enough firepower in the bottom of turn 6 to kill the warriors and Necron lord and thus force the phase out with only the Immortals and Monolith on the board.

Victory to the Eldar!!

Analysis: My battleplan from the start was to shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. The Scorpions were really counter-charge/distract units. Plus I didn't have enough painted to take anything else! Concentrating on the phase out was the goal and facing 50 Necrons made that quite intimidating, but since the objective was "kill kill kill" and I didn't have the resources to take on the monolith without gobs of luck, I figured I'd go for it.

T_D advanced into my firing lanes with the assurance of any Necron commander that he could take a beating and still kick ass, but this time was proven wrong. Because he advanced I effectively had two free turns of shooting and some luck came my way as the monolith missed with its ordnance shot and the WBB rolls were poor. As the game heated up in turn three, I had lost only 3 jetbikes and a vyper to 12-14 Necrons.

From that point on I pressed the body, ignoring the monolith and immortals except when there was no other targets and hitting the destroyers and warriors with everything. The Dark Reapers were instrumental in this case and perhaps Marc should have brought more to bear on them early on.

I had luck combined with a good battle plan and managed to win with moderate casualties. It was not easy, and could have gone the other way with the roll of the dice.

To Rat or Not To Rat, That is the Question

The recent war is breaking, at least for a bit but we may charge right back at them despite the difficulty they represent. I'm still all for it as I have not lost anything in this war and am learning new things all the time.

I've consolidated all my possessions into one station now and trying to decide what to do next. The Rokh is no good for PvP of any type because its so damn expensive and slow. Perhaps a situation where I sit off 200 KM and shoot at someone but getting that situation is difficult and too easy to get ambushed in this almost 300 million ISK machine. Ratting in low sec also presents PvP danger so the Rokh is out for that as well. Really the only thing I can think of it being useful for is high sec missions where PvP is unlikely, or a large gank gang (fleet?) where I have some protection.

The Drake on the other hand, is perfect for ratting. Its affordable enough that I can lose one and not die inside, but powerful enough to take on almost any BS spawn I run into. The problem is our corp does not have a good spot to rat in really yet. The old 0.0 cottage is not exactly friendly territory and a new one proposed by a corpmate is deep in 0.0 in unfamiliar territory. I'm considering running complexes in high sec instead and see if I can make some money and security status rise out of it. Give it a try anyways I suppose.

In 40K news, I have a 1500 point game against Necrons tomorrow. I guess I had better come up with an army list!

War is Hell

In Eve, I never actually got in a real war with an opposing corp worth worrying about. That changed recently and we are seriously outclassed by our opponent right now. Fortunately, I've avoided losing any ships including a narrow escape last night in my Ferox.

Meanwhile, in my industrial corp I've began the move into exploring Invention starting with T2 Invulnerability Fields. The main stopper at the moment is the sheer number of skills and expense of the skillbooks. I thought Derranna was close but man was I wrong! She needs another 24 days of training. Still, I'm on my way.

Another Notch In the Belt

I defeated Sean and his Imperial Fists yesterday, but mostly it was his inexperience with the army that saw me to victory.

Need Those DRONES!

I tried another level 4 mission last night and it was significantly harder than the first simply because I warped in too close on the first room and had a swarm of frigate drones and a battleship drone all within 20 km. I probably could have taken the big one but my T1 drones were taking too long on the frigates and I had to warp.

I came back with the Drake since it has a better shield tank due to the missile launchers not using cap so I can boost much more. Also, the missiles don't care about range so I can fling them with abandon. Once the swarm close to me was gone I came back with the Rokh and cleared the rest of the stage. On the second stage I could have done it solely with the Rokh but I foolishly agressed some Spider drones too close and they zoomed in before I could tag them and I think they were webbing me allowing the rest of the blob to catch up. Meh, live and learn.

So I need those T2 drones for in close defense and according to Eve MON I should have them by April 4.

A Lot Has Happened In Eve...

... since the last post.

On Thursday night I got some good old fashioned PvP action in with my corp mates and helped bag four bad guys and scare off a fifth with only an interceptor loss on our side.

On Saturday morning I got another Angel Extravaganza that I easily completed in the Rokh without having to warp out. Heck, I never even used my shield booster, the tank I have going now is working out pretty nicely. Plus that mission gave me the standing to get my first level four agent.

On Sunday morning I ran my first level four mission and was able to complete it with the Rokh as well. Sunday evening, Large Hybrid IV completed and the plan is down to its last 7 days or so. Next up, Drone Improvements!

Busy Week

Due to having the Kids for part of March Break, Warhammer on Tuesday, and new computer being set up Wednesday and Thursday, I haven't been on eve a heck of a lot lately. Enough to fuel the POS, swap blueprints, and run a quick mission. Fortunately, this weekend promises to be much quieter and life has calmed down significantly for next week so back to normal.

Eldar Civil War

Well, not really. Civil war implies one nation fighting itself but in this case the Dark Eldar and Craftworld Eldar are separated by more than 10 millennia. Safe to say they are not kissing cousins.

I went to GW Bayshore last night where kind Johanna allowed me and Rob (Darkscythe) to play some 40K even though its Fantasy night. We got lots of dirty looks and I reveled in it.

We played 1000 pts Take and Hold mission. I used the same list I used against James:
Farseer with Fortune
10 Scorps with Exarch in Wave Serpent
10 Guardians with Warlock in Wave Serpent
6 Jetbikes
2 Vypers
Fire Prism

And Rob's list:
Archon + 4 Incubi + 5 Warriors in Raider
10 Warriors in Raider
10 Warriors in Raider
15 Warriors
5 Jetbikes
Ravager with three Disintegrators

Some Pictures!

I deployed almost entirely on one flank with only the Vypers on the other side to distract and give Rob some food for thought. The Dusk and Dawn rule applied and caused the first turn to be in darkness, so when I won the roll off I forced Rob to move first.

He advanced his raiders on the far flank and his jetbikes up the middle. I countered with the vypers blowing up a raider and my Jetbikes shooting up his followed by assault which was ineffective.

Rob chose to act and got his Arhcon and retinue to finish off my jetbikes while raider and warrior firepower shot up my vypers. The Ravager went down and the exposed Archon and retinue faced a Shuriken Storm from the Guardians and Scorpions killing them all including the Archon getting insta-killed by a errant Shuriken Cannon disc. With the Archon gone, the Dark Eldar were slowly pushed back by the advancing Scorpions whose fortuned armour proved too hard to break. The surviving Dark Eldar jetbikes tried to cause some havoc by destroying the guardian wave serpent and damaging the Fire Prism crystal, but ultimately missed exacting revenge on the Farseer for the death of the Archon and then succumbed to Destructor flames from the passing fleeing Warlock.

In the end I had the Fire Prism and Scorpions on the objective to one Dark Eldar Warrior squad. Victory to Craftworld Canathius!

Analysis:
Dark Eldar are a finesse army that requires nerves of steel to pull off. Faced with staying on the Raider for another turn and risking getting pinned by the destruction of the boat from the long-reaching Fire Prism or assaulting and assisting the Jetbikes against the Guardian Jetbikes on turn 2, I understand why Rob chose the latter. Still, I feel it left his unit out in the open exposed to my firepower that was his ultimate undoing. With the Archon and incubi dead and the Ravager destroyed, there was no one thing that could challenge the Scorpions from marching to the objective and cleaning up along the way.

Great game!

This And That

The greatest and most frustrating part of Eve is the skill training system. That a character can train and improve even when you are not online makes it easy to come and go in Eve and not feel like you are falling behind your contemporaries. On the other hand, it makes for a lot of clock watching, aching while waiting for the days, hours, and minutes to pass until that next skill is complete.

What makes it even worse is that there is always another skill set you want to try out and its hard to stay on track with the current plan when another plan is just begging to be started. For example, at the turn of the year I set out on a combat training program to improve my basic fighting skills. I was flying a rail Ferox but not very well; my shots were missing and not doing much damage, my drones couldn't go beyond 20 kms, and my fittings were so tight I needed grease to slip on anything useful. In addition, I wanted to fly a battleship.

I made a plan that would see me improve my skills first and then slip comfortably into the Rokh. Of course after a week of my multi-week plan I trained up the battleship skills and got my Rokh anyways. So I made the situation worse by getting into a vastly more expensive ship with barely improved skills. I did better since then, only breaking off a day or two here and there for Gallente and Ammar frigate skills and other miscellaneous stuff and now I'm down to about 13 days with a bunch of level IV skills but for the most part my combat ability has vastly improved. I can use T2 shield extenders and boosters, my weapons hit often and hard, and my drones are... well better.

Once I'm done with the combat flying improvement plan, next on the list is T2 drones. Fortunately that plan is only 10 days long. Beyond that, its either Gallente cruisers and battlecruisers or Interceptors, haven't decided which yet.

In other news...

I've got a small game of 40K tonight against Rob and his Dark Eldar. I played him once a long time ago back in GM7 and beat him soundly but he had just started then. Time to see how much he has improved.

I'll be using the same army I used against James a few weeks ago as its pretty sound and I'm comfortable with it. Report forthcoming tomorrow.

Blood Sweat and Tears

Blood: Saturday night I got out on a PvP mission with a few guys from the corp in my Ferox. Forgot how much fun it is to fly that sucker. I help bag a Retriever and Rupture putting me in 9th spot on the killboard. Gotta get out more often.

Sweat: The training plan got sidetracked a bit as I trained up Amarr Frigate to III and then Jury Rigging to III so I could get Shield Rigging to I this morning. This allowed me to throw on some shield rigs on the Rokh to boost those resistances. I'm back on the plan today and the list is getting smaller all the time. I now have access to T2 shield extenders.

Tears: Now that I have three +3 implants in my missioning clone, I was very reluctant to switch to my other clone for the weekend and lose the training time. Look, a tear. :(

Hmmmm Interesting

While running a quick mission after work yesterday I once again got swarmed by frigates in close. While waiting for the drones to do their work (need T2 drones!) I watched my shields get chewed up and decided to throw on the afterburner to make myself slightly harder for the frigs to hit. Then I noticed the two remaining frigs start following me in a straight line directly behind me, dropping their transversal to below 50 m/s. Intrigued I trained the 425s on them and POP! Got 'em!

I'm going to have to try that again. Could be a solution to frigate swarmings. Also need to trade out the ECM burst for something of a shield tank. Oh and I get Caldari Battleship IV today, that will increase my shield resistances by 5% which will help as well.

Massive Attack - Part II

Last night I was assigned the Massive Attack mission against Sansha Nation again. This is the mission that last Friday took me four hours and a new Scorpion Battleship to complete and nearly destroyed my Rokh.

I was smarter this time. I had a Drake as my shield tanking frigate hunter with more firepower for taking out frigates than the Scorpion, I moved all three mission ships (Rokh, Drake, and salvaging Thrasher) to the mission system, and I realized that the mission was not in deadspace so I could make bookmarks in the room and warp out only to return at 100 klicks away to unleash the power of the Rokh upon my enemies. All in all, the whole mission including salvaging and the bonus room took just over an hour and a half and I only got my Rokh damaged once.

The loot and bounty was decent and I got another 14+ million implant that I again chose to plug in rather than sell to decrease training times. I'm not hurting for cash and I'm actually starting to make decent profit on the mission. Still, I'm really looking forward to level four missions for the bigger cash.

Gardening

My mentor said as I was buying POS modules and fuel from him that running a POS was a lot like tending a garden. You're always fiddling with things and setting them up and checking them and so forth and so on. I have to agree.

My "garden" is flourishing. The past couple weeks were dedicated to getting it setup and fueled and this week I'm entering the maintenance phase where I work out how to get the fuel I need regularly to the POS from empire space. I've arranged for a fuel contract from a corpmate for the Isotopes, but everything else is up for grabs.

If I get this working well for a month or two, I might consider upgrading to a medium control tower.

Weekend Report

Well, despite the inclement weather my game weekend survived and great fun was had.

Friday night: I was faced with a level three mission called Massive Attack and I was determined to do it myself. But it was hard, so hard.

The problem is my choice of ship and weapons. The Rokh hits so very hard and so very far, but sacrifices tank for gank. Something gets in close I can't hit it and rely on drones to finish it off quickly. But when several frigates are buzzing around within 10 klicks I'm in serious trouble and have to warp out. If they would come within 5000 meters I could smartbomb them to death but alas, I had to think of something else.

So I went the opposite extreme and bought and built a super tanking Scorpion battleship with four piddly assault launchers. Worked like a charm. With the close frigates out of the way, the Rokh could return and take out the cruisers and ships in the next room. Yay.

But when I went into the bonus room I found myself not only surrounded by four Sansha's Daemons frigates but unaligned and caught around some structures. I was halfway through around before I warped out. Shit.

Back to the Scoprion, trundle through three gates, get to the bonus room gate and ... DAMN! Forgot the key! Go back to station, get the key, go through the three gates and then the bonus gate, nuke the frigates and the two cruisers and get the prize, a 13.5 million implant. Nice. Worth it? Maybe.

That only took about 4 hours.

Saturday Morning: I went to Chris' place and played some BFG. We started a 2000 pt cruiser clash and well... it wasn't pretty. You see, I always like to try some elaborate strategy with my ships, trying to use them in some plan that catches my opponent off guard. But the reality of the matter it, it rarely if ever works. Chris saw me deploying on one flank, matched me with his six light cruisers, then turned 90 degrees and left me in the dust. He then proceeded to ruin half of my fleet while the other half was abandoned. I surrendered after two turns.

Reality is, Chaos fleets work best when applying the sledgehammer so in a rematch I did just that. I got a bit lucky and managed to take down one battlebarge to put me in the lead and eventually his other battlebarge just got too far out of position to impact the rest of the battle.

Saturday Evening: Andrew got the expansion to Twilight Imperium so around three I trundled over and we started setting up, actually starting the game around 5 pm. It was a long one but lots of fun. In the end I won by serendipity when I took the right card to get the VPs to win. Great game and the expansion is great stuff.

All in all a great weekend!

Weekend Fun

If the weather clears up this evening, I should have a game weekend up and running as Kim goes off to one of her Girls' Weekends. Eve tonight, Battlefleet Gothic tomorrow morning, board gaming with Andrew tomorrow night.

If the weather still sucks, I'll still have board gaming with Andrew tomorrow night but everything else will get canceled.

Full report on Monday.

KODA Prime is Online

My first POS is online. I'm so proud. More structures to come including more sentries and a mobile lab.
