As promised, pictures!

So here are the promised pictures. I used a white base and black ink wash as a holder until I finish the model and decide what I like.

Meanwhile, progress is being made on the turret for the waveserpent.

I also wanted to quickly do up the new epic buildings but the primer started flaking off as I drybrushed. I was spitting mad. Despite washing and scrubbing in warm soapy water, the primer still did not stick. I suspect cold temperatures in the garage may have played a part.

I'll scrub them clean and try again.

Blue? Are you mad?!

I ran into the situation where I didn't know what colour to paint the tassals and headgear on the Exarch and one scoprion. I turned to the painting gurus on Deepspace for advance and the majority suggested several types of blue inks/shading. I was incredulous that it would look right but I gave it a try.

It didn't look right. I even asked Kim if she thought it looked ok, and she said "nope". Basically, the red, bone, and black majority colours are not complemented by the blues. It takes the model in a direction far from what I was going for.

So I backed off the shades of blue and went with a simple white base and black ink wash. Different than the bone-coloured weapons and contrast to the helmet, but still subtle enough not to overwhelm the model. I'll take a re-evaluation look after the model is done to see if I like it or if I need to try again.

Pictures coming tomorrow.

Halfway there

Here is the current state of the Scorpions:

I'm liking them.

And here is what the new turret will look like:

Since I took this picture, I painted the canopy bars and started some highlights.

A-ha!

I made some progress last night, finishing the base colour of the weapons. With that hard part over, I can move into the detailing of the brown, black, grey, green, etc and then finished with the gems. Soon my new squad will be ready!

Drat!

Being away all weekend, I didn't get any painting done since putting the wraithbone and brown wash on the scoprions on Friday morning. Last night I hoped to finish the weapons and move onto the final details but life interveened and I only got one model done this morning over breakfast. Grrrr....

Tonight should be more productive.

Battle Report Pics

Against Sean.

And against Dave.

War on an Epic Scale at Bayshoe

I've been in a slump in Epic recently, losing 4 out of 5 of my previous games with the lone victory feeling more like a loss, so I felt nervous going into last night's game against Sean, an experienced player who knows his army inside and out.

I played cautiously in the first turn, choosing to force the whirlwinds to move out and engage rather than run into their sustained fire range. This avoided some serious pain. Turn two we both brought in our terminators near the Blitz objective on my side but he got the drop on me and with firefight support from a tactical formation he engaged my platoon of marines and forlorn hope. After a few kills on each side, we went into the resolution with him +2 and I rolled double ones. He got a six. Bam! Seven more units dead and the platoon is gone.

Later in the turn Platoon #3 (who was minding their business on the other side of the board) was assaulted by the thunderhawk and two Assault marines which decimated that formation. Ouch. Fortunately, some good news for me as my dreadclaw dropping formations came in and removed the whirlwinds and secured the Blitz goal. And Sean's rolling started to skunk up the place as his 4+ rolling ratio fell below 25% for the rest of the game.

Turn 3 and 4 saw mostly maneuvuring for position and objectives as we both tried to secure those two points. However we were unsuccessful after four turns and went to victory points where I came out on top, ~1100-750.

I had enough time for a second game, and there was lots of people there. Besides Sean and me, another Sean (Krago), Adam, Al, and Dave (dragonsbane) had arrived. So I paired up with Dave and Sean took on Al (Krago and Adam were already playing on a third table).

Dave's Imperial Guard army sported a big Warlord in the middle of the battleline which caused me some worry, but since there was no thunderhawks I felt somewhat soothed.

In the second turn Dave became blinded by his 8BP rocket pods on the valkryies and drove them up the middle of the board in a double action to unleash on one of my rhino platoons. However, even 8BPs are sadly outmatched by infantry in cover during a double action. The marines shrugged off the shooting and then combined with the other rhino platoon and Forlorn Hope to surround, engage, and destroy the valkryies and their stormtroopers. The warlord titan tried to get back control but his firepower was not impressive enough to scare me as my dreadclaw platoon came down and assaulted the Super Heavy tank company, breaking them. In turn 3 the terminators teleported in and tried to finish the job and mostly succeeded, but took 4 deaths in return (6 hits, 4+ reinforced, I roll nothing but ones and two for the first handful. Re-rolled, only two made the 4+). Counter fire broke my big platoon, and the termies were broken as well. Not the stellar attack I was hoping for!

Fortunately, the rest of my army performed well and my formations rallied. The game ended in turn four as I took the Blitz and a second objective for Take and Hold (Dave miscued and failed to place the warlord so he was contesting an objective). I still successfully defended my Blitz with the third Forlorn Hope. Had the game gone to victory points, I'm confident I would have still won because my terminators and large platoon were still alive while the Stormtroopers and super-heavy tank company were not.

Analysis:

I think I played well in my first game, both in selecting an army well suited to the task and placing my terminators where they were needed the most. With Sean having more activations and the super-annoying ability of the Thunderhawk to land wherever it needs without triggering overwatch, winning on Objectives was going to be difficult so I was fortunately to have won on VPs. Had Sean's rolling been better, the game would have been closer to victory for him I fear.

In the second game, Dave played very well with two major exceptions: driving the stormtroopers ahead of the rest of the army and dooming them to ineffective death, and not getting the warlord to contest an objective in turn 3 and 4. On my side, I played a fairly cautious game trying to preserve my forces as much as possible and avoid losing my two big formations due to some crappy armour save rolling. I succeeded (barely) and won because of it.

I don't think taking the warlord was a bad idea except it did hurt his activation count, allowing me to wait til the end of turn two to do my dreadclaw drop and catch all nearby formations already activated. But like I said, something that big needs to be sitting on an objective in turn 3 and holding it on turn 4. Anything else is a sad waste except for maybe getting the Break their Spirit goal.

In my army, having the one big terminator squad was a good idea. Not as flexible as two small ones, but the three oblit stands really adds to their firepower and range and gives me one place on the board where enemy aircraft dare not go. I love the big squad in dreadclaws along with the forlorn hope squad; being able to wait until its most advantageous to bring my units down makes up for having to pick the location before deployment. I don't know why more marine players don't field a strike cruiser and a formation or two to take advantage of that ability. Terminators show up at the beginning of a turn and take blast markers, sort of negating their ability to go anywhere.

Still, I missed not having any war engines. Deathwheels, Ferals, even decimators really add to the battle for me. Oh well, maybe next time.

Game Tonight And Update

(AKA, I'm so dead!)

I'm playing Sean tonight, aka dude123, in Epic, 3000 pts. I'm not too confident as his marine army is nicely selected and I really wish I had artillery as his whirlwinds are going to be a pain. What sucks is it seems everyone is cheering for him instead of me!! I'm the one on a losing streak I tell ya! Yeesh, win a couple games against Al and Chris and suddenly you're the bad guy. ;)

My painting progress slowed this week as Monday night I had to run into town to pick up my Forge World order from driodman, and last night was Valentine's Day and I spent it with my honey. Since I'm playing tonight, no love for the scoprions until tomorrow night. To make matters worse, we are leaving Friday afternoon for the weekend. So scorpions may not be finished for a while yet.

Speaking of the Forge World order here are the two new buildings I got:

I also got a Forge World turret for my custom build Wave Serpent. You see, back in the day the Wave Serpent had rules but no model, not even from Forge World. The only 40K scale wave serpent was one custom built by the guys in White Dwarf based off of the Epic scale model. I got really adventurous (for me anyway) and made my own wave serpent from a falcon and plasticard. I was so proud of it, the only thing I thought sucked was the turret I fashioned.

As you can see, not a work of beauty. But hey, at the time there was no other option. Of course, a couple months later Forge World offered their interpretation of the Wave Serpent conversion with its slick rounded turret and my custom jobbie looked like crap in comparison. Sigh.

So, I've always wanted to get a Forge World turret. Latey I've tried three times. Once through Corey but it got lost in the move. Once through Benoit, but that fell through as well. Finally my latest attempt succeeded and I got it Monday night. To my horror, however, the mold was offset and the brightlances were horribly deformed and unsalvagable.

Rather than admit defeat and try to return them or order new ones, I chopped them off the weapon housing which was recoverable and stole the two plastic brightlances from my new wave serpent kit, chopped and filed, and then glued them on. Perfect!

As you can see, the turret is ready for painting. Soon my custom wave serpent will be slightly more acceptable.

Squad Half Done

The base coats of the Red Gore, Blood Red, and Blazing Orange has been applied and looks acceptable. I'm glad I screwed up the guardians first cause I would have been annoyed has I screwed up the scorpions. Here's two pics, slightly different lighting, the finished template model on the far left:

Next up the wraithbone weapons.

Speaking of the Guardians, those four models came out of the dip today and the paint rightly peeled off. They are back into the queue, coming up after these two:

Although, the guardians might have to fight off my temptation to paint up these three first:

The Saga Continues!

OK, last post I complained about using too much Blood Red on the guardians and getting them too bright. This is what I was talking about:

So I tried again with a striking scoprion and got a much better result, although the picture sucks.

Now, I also did some comparision pictures. The two farseers:

And the two warlocks, one painted recently and one painted a few years ago.

Now you understand why I'm repainting the army!

Finally, just for keith, improved pictures with superior indirect lighting:

I like the second pic more. I used a lamp with a daylight blub to provide indirect light in both cases, but the black background of the first picture caused a tad too much over exposure. Either way, you can really see the detail.

Bad Paint! Bad!

My next four guardians took a turn for the worse as I applied too much Blood Red paint and totally swamped the Red Gore colour. Tried putting Red Gore back on top but model is too bright red now. I'm going to try again on a scoprion and see if I can do better this time.

Farseer And Warlock

Well, I got some time to work on the Farseer and Warlock models this weekend, and got them to the point where all that is left is the basing.

Starting point on Friday:

The warlock: First picture shows work in progress on Saturday, and subsequent three pictures shows the completed model. The last picture was done after I decided I was unhappy with the blue highlighting on the mask brow and went with a thin line of codex grey instead.

The Farseer: He got attention on Sunday. First picture is without gems done, second with the gems, third showing the cloak, and the finished product in picture 4.

Next up, four guardians to test out variations of the painting scheme and settle the question: pink as the last highlight, or blazing orange? The warlock and farseer make a strong case for blazing orange.

Here's My Article

If Specialist Games won't publish it, I will!

Building a Black Storm Army

With pictures!

So I Didn't Win the Competition...

The Epic Article Writing competetion has declared the winner and I was not it. I wasn't even first or second runner up. I am disappointed as I had gotten my hopes up, but I accept that my brilliance won't always be recognized by the general population. ;-)

The upside of this is that I don't have to worry about collecting and painting a second Epic army, allowing me to concentrate on the revamp of my Eldar. With the level of enthusiasm for painting 40K at a high for me right now, this is a perfect opprotunity to get some good squads done.

Titan Megabattle Report

To see them all in reverse order:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/quintaan/tags/titanmegabattle/

It was Al and I combining our titans versus the fearsome Imperator of Derek and Tyranids of Dave O. No Eldar nor Orks were spotted during the action. (Not true, one Ork Great Gargant strolled by but couldn't stay.)

On our side:
Warlord
Banelord
Ravager
2 Feral Warhounds
2 Deathwheels
2 Decimator super heavies

Versus:
Imperator
Dominatrix and bodyguard
3 Hierophants
1 Big flying skimmer thingy, like a super Harridan
2 Huge biovore type thingys

The Blitz objectives were on opposite sides of the table, the one Al and I were going for on the right, and the target of our enemies we deployed to the left.

The Imperator tipped its hand and deployed more to the left so we went hard to the right to negate the majority of its firepower. All three turns were were successful, limiting the Imperator to knocking down shields and causing blast markers.

The threee Hierophants attacked from the right but the combined firepower of the ravager, Warlord, Deathwheels, and one feral titan proved to be deadly, taking them down one at a time.

However, on the other side the uberharridan proved deadly in killing a decimator and breaking the second Feral in assault, and when we counter-charged with the Banelord it caused 5 damage points on the titan. Derek rolled really well to hit, hitting 5 times out of 6, and I failed to save either the Macro weapon hit or the two normal hits, and combined with the two tk hits the Banelord was severely damaged. To make matters worse, the Imerpator had shot up the Banelord earlier and while the void shields had protected it, the number of blast markers from its BP14 barrage combined to break the Titan and leave the Blitz objective open for the Dominiatrix to march in and win the game at the end of turn 3.

So, while only losing two decimators and a handful of damage points on the Banelord and Ravager, and killing all three Tyranid Hierophants, wounding the Dominatrix, and making the Imperator double all around the board, we still lost 2-0 (Blitz and Take and Hold).

We had lots of fun though, and hope to try it again sometime in the fall.:thumbgreen:

Sorry for the Lack of Posts

Its been a busy week. Wednesday night I was at a an all Titan Megabattle with Dave O, Al, and Derek. I have pictures, but Flickr was being annoying yesterday. It was a lot of fun and it looked like Al and I were going to pull off a victory when our left flank collapsed and the Blitz was taken by the dominatrix.

Last night I was busy babysitting while Kim was out, so no painting or computer time there. I hope to get some painting and pictures this weekend.
