I think this is the first army I've fielded where I painted most of the minis. I'm working on re-habilitating four of the marine stands to make the second Infantry Company look more consistent.
My two auctions for Epic buildings arrived last night and I was so excited I had to put them all together at once. Can't wait to get them out on the table Thursday.
I'm hoping to get some pictures done tonight if I can find the time and space.
Here are some promised good pictures where the flash doesn't wash out the model. Still working on my lighting for taking pictures though, can't get it quite right. Getting better though.
Defilers. Work in progress in the first picture, battle-ready paint job in the second. They will get more touchups before I'm done with them.
Decimator. Actually its a Forge World Stormsword super heavy but its description matches the Decimator nicely.
The fearsome Deathwheel. I've made two but haven't painted up the second one yet.
Doomwings filling in for Swiftdeaths until I have some more money to order Forge World Lightning fighters.
Forge World Helltalons. I have a 40K scale one too and it looks equally awesome. I don't know how Forge World does it.
I didn't paint this Ravager titan (although I did do some repairs and touchups), but included him cause he looks cool.
I finally decided to tackle the Helltalons and finish their engines, canopy windows, and lightning effects. Helltalons with Doomwings to provide Air Support for the ground forces:

Damn flash really washes it out, but you can tell the difference. I'll get some better pics tonight.
In two weeks I'm facing Adam, so in order to be prepared I'm painting up some fighters. Old Doomwing models to proxy in as Swiftdeaths. For 200 pts it will give me an activation for going on CAP and give his bombers or Nightwings something to think about before going on ground attacks. If I'm really worried about ground attacks, the Helltalons can intercept too and provide me with two protective CAPs.
If I manage to get the doomwings done next week, I might even have some time to do up Deathwheel #2.
Well, got a good hour and a half of work done last night.
- Finished the "temporary" obliterators including the basing.
- Rebased all the bikes I have so I now have a decent bike formation of 8 stands.
- Cleaned off the metal banelord bits and reglued them to the body. And then made a battle tail for him.
- Remodeled on to bigger bases the two slaanesh titans that will be acting as Feral Warhound titans for my army.
Now I need some black primer to prime all these new models so I can paint some more. We'll see what tonight's 4000 pt game against Al brings before I determine what to paint next.
Still need to add Banelord Titan, warhound titans, daemons, raptors, and bikes. A few more rhinos wouldn't hurt either.
I have a thoroughly enjoyable game and a half against Sean (aka dude123) last night. I made some newb mistakes in the first match that we called it halfway through and restarted. In the second I made some much better improvements but still avoided thinking about the objectives until far too late. Ended up in a tie with a possible VP advantage for me.
I've scheduled a game (almost a grudge match) with Al next Monday. I need my obliterators painted up by then to provide much needed AA support. First though I'm rebasing the stands I flocked in static grass and putting them in the sand like my recent efforts. Its been bugging me. :P
When dealing with Warhammer 40K, using the word "reality" or "realistic" is travelling out onto unstable ground.
Dalton recently has mentioned a few times that he finds it distasteful (my word, not his) when players create marine armies with components that would come from multiple companies because in "reality" this would not happen.
Being a stickler for following realism as closely as possible, this accusation struck a nerve for me as I often create lists that include many units from different companies of the Black Storm. I certain degree of uncomfortableness sets in as I considered his position and it required from mental acrobatics to recover my footing.
My arguments that making Black Storm marine lists composing of units from multiple companies are as follows:
1) The Black Storm is organized such that the 4 battle companies are typically intended to be supported by detachments from the other four dedicated companies.
2) Space Marine lists often field mixed detachments as veterans and scouts are seconded to the battle companies.
3) Marine companies of 100 men (assuming 100% capacity) are too small for any but the most trivial battle operations.
4) Old faithful: reality is a nebulous concept in this universe setting. Military operations in M41may operate in a way our M3 minds cannot comprehend.
This appeased my internal daemons sufficiently so that I could sleep again, but I will have to re-write my index astartes article to update it with recent changes in my playing style (10 man tact squads) and collections in Epic (Deathwheels and decimators, titans).
I played a lunchtime game against Dalton today and score a victory.
We each had a 750pt Lost and the Damned army and played a Seek and Destroy mission.
My army:
Aspiring Champion leading 15 mutants
5 Marines with infiltrate, lascannon, plasmagun, champion
15 Traitors with autocannon and plasmagun
8 Furies
Leman Russ MBT
His Army (using Star Wars minis):
Aspiring Champion leading ~30 mutants
Aspiring Champion leading ~8 Traitors with assault weapons
10 Gibbering Hordes
10 Big Mutants
Sentinel
My MBT was brilliant blowing holes in gibbering hordes, big mutants, and normal mutants. Even when it scattered it was only a couple inches. My mutants did ok, and the traitors even got one good salvo of rapid fire that removed 5 enemy mutants.
Taking the Russ was a bit overwhelming but it will make him think more about anti-tank next time. Just like the two debacles last time made me think about better armour!
